Freshfields Strengthens U.S. Litigation and Investigations Practice with Former Senior Counsel to President Obama

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP (Freshfields) announced today that Brent Wible, former Senior Counsel and Special Assistant to President Barack Obama, has joined Freshfields as Counsel in the firm's U.S. litigation and global investigations practice. At Freshfields, he will focus on the representation of public companies, financial institutions, board members and senior executives in connection with internal and regulatory investigations and related civil litigation.

Brent joins the firm after a distinguished career in public service. In the Office of the White House Counsel, Brent advised senior White House and other executive branch officials on responses to congressional investigations and counseled senior administration officials on risk management and litigation. He was part of the leadership team that implemented President Obama's historic Clemency Initiative, which resulted in the President's commuting the sentences of more than 1,700 non-violent drug offenders sentenced under outdated laws.

Before moving to the White House, Brent served as Assistant Deputy Chief of the Fraud Section of the U.S. Department of Justice. At Justice, he investigated and prosecuted a wide range of white-collar offenses and supervised a team of attorneys in the investigation and prosecution of complex financial fraud. Among the high-priority cases with significant international aspects were the LIBOR trial of two traders at a global financial institution, the guilty plea of a senior trader in a LIBOR case involving another global financial institution, and the prosecution of futures trader Navinder Sarao in the second ever criminal spoofing case. In these and other cases, Brent worked closely with the Antitrust Division of the Justice Department, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, and other law enforcement and regulatoy agencies.

Brent previously served for eight years as an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York and is the sixth alumnus of that office to join Freshfields. There, he conducted dozens of grand jury investigations, and handled many criminal jury trials in prosecutions for mail and wire fraud, identity theft, immigration fraud and money laundering. He also investigated and prosecuted numerous cases involving official corruption by state and local legislators and officials at various government agencies. As Deputy Chief of the Appeals Unit, Brent also supervised the briefs and oral arguments in approximately 100 appeals before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, including multiple insider trading cases involving hedge funds and expert-networking firms, and securities fraud cases involving market manipulation and bribery of stockbrokers.

"We're delighted to have landed Brent at Freshfields, following a sterling career as a federal prosecutor and in the White House. He has a brilliant track record of success in handling the most difficult issues in the most important cases while in government. His experience investigating and litigating a broad range of regulatory enforcement matters and as a counselor to the President on some of the most challenging and controversial issues facing the country will be invaluable to our clients in their most difficult battles. He will add to Freshfields' leading position as the firm of choice for complex global investigations," said Aaron Marcu, head of the firm's U.S. litigation practice.

"I'm thrilled to join the incredible team at Freshfields. The firm has a truly global footprint and offers exceptional service to clients wherever the need arises, and is particularly well positioned to handle the multi jurisdictional investigations that have become a fixture of the legal landscape. I'm excited to be part of the continued growth of our white-collar practice and the D.C. office," Brent said.

Freshfields has the world's leading global investigations practice, with extensive experience in conducting large-scale cross-border investigations for multinational corporations and financial institutions. In the last five years, its team of 170 partners and nearly 500 total lawyers has handled more than 600 investigations, including internal investigations, reputational and operational crises, and complex enforcement actions. The firm's global litigation practice comprises more than 750 lawyers around the world.
