FCC Chairman Ajit Pai Begins to Free the Internet From Burdensome OverregulationCitizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) praised Federal Communications Commission (FCC (News - Alert)) Chairman Ajit Pai today after his announcement of a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that is intended to reconsider the imposition of an outdated regulatory regime on the internet. On February 26, 2015, acting on a directive from President Obama, then-FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler (News - Alert) rammed through the Open Internet Order to establish "net neutrality." The order reclassified internet service providers (ISPs) under Title II of the 1934 Communications Act, which allowed the agency to regulate ISPs as if they were antique, rotary-dialed phone companies, and led to less investment and innovation. CAGW President Tom Schatz said, "Chairman Pai is taking an important step to free the internet from government control, bring high-speed internet to more Americans, boost competition, and create more jobs in both the construction and use of new networks. It will also restore the authority of the Federal Trade Commission to protect online privacy for the entire internet ecosystem. However, the best and most permanent solution to the so-called issue of net neutrality is for Congress to modernize telecommunications laws. We commend Chairman Pai for his open and transparent process to consider the reversal of these toxic Title II regulations, and look forward to expressing our views on behalf of our more than one million members and supporters during the comment period for the proposed rules once they are released."
