Math, Science, and Technology Magnet Academy at Roosevelt High School Named 2017 California Gold Ribbon School and Title I Academic Achieving School

The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, one of the largest in-district public school transformation organizations in the nation, announced today that its Math, Science, and Technology Magnet Academy at Roosevelt High School has been named a 2017 California Gold Ribbon School and Title I Academic Achieving School by the California Department of Education.

The Gold Ribbon Awards recognize California schools that have made gains in implementing academic content and performance standards adopted by the state Board of Education. These include California Standards for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, California English Language Development Standards, and Next Generation Science Standards. The Academic Achieving School award is additional recognition given only to schools receiving federal Title I funds that assist in meeting the educational needs of students living at or below the poverty line.

Roosevelt Magnet, located at Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights, joined the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools in 2011, when its student graduation rate was 59%. In 2016, however, the school was amog the top five highest-performing high schools in ELA in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), and its graduation rate was 99 percent. The 2014-15 graduation rate was 100 percent.

"We could not be more proud of what our students at Roosevelt Magnet have accomplished. This recognition is a reflection of the hard work of the school's dedicated and talented staff as well as of the tremendous support our students receive at home and from our amazing community and LAUSD partners," said Joan Sullivan, CEO of the Partnership, a nonprofit organization whose model combines the rigor and innovation of instructional leadership programs with authentic community partnerships and family engagement to transform district public schools and lead transformational system-wide reforms.

The California Gold Ribbon Schools Award was created to honor schools in place of the California Distinguished Schools Program, which is on hiatus while California creates new assessment, accountability, and continuous improvement systems. Roosevelt Magnet will be honored for its awards in May.
