Partnership for Health IT Patient Safety Launches Patient ID Safe Practices Initiative at April 20 Webinar

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., April 5, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Patient misidentifications occur during every aspect of care from registration to discharge and beyond, putting thousands of patients at risk every day.

The Partnership for Health IT Patient Safety, a multi-stakeholder collaborative convened and operated by ECRI Institute, is leading the national initiative to prevent patient misidentification through the safe use of health IT. In February 2017, they released the Health IT Safe Practice Toolkit on the Safe Use of Health IT for Patient Identification to help strengthen existing programs for ensuring the correct identification of patients.

On April 20, 1:30 to 2:30 pm, ET, the Partnership is launching its new patient identification resource at a free educational webinar. The webinar, co-presented by the Partnership and ECRI Institute Patient Safety Organization (PSO), is designed to help healthcare leaders implement the steps outlined in the new toolkit.

Faculty will address the critical roles that various stakeholders—including hospitals, outpatient clinics, health IT developers—play in improving the accuracy of patient data.

Presenters include:

  • Hardeep Singh, MD, MPH, Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine, Houston
  • Lorraine Possanza, DPM, JD, MBE, Partnership for Health IT Patient Safety Program Director, ECRI Institute
  • Amy Tsou, MD, MSc, Senior Research Analyst, Health Technology Assessment, ECRI Institute
  • Jeremy J. Michel, MD, MHS, Health Technology Assessment, ECRI Institute
  • Robert Giannini, NHA, CHTS-IM/CP, Patient Safety Analyst/Consultant, ECRI Institute

The toolkit and recommendations are based on evidence analyzed by ECRI Institute PSO in its recently completed Deep Dive analysis of over 7,600 safety events related to patient identification. The ECRI Institute PSO Deep Dive: Patient Identification executive summary is available for free download; full report is available to all ECRI Institute PSO and partner PSO members.

The Partnership provides a non-punitive learning environment and includes healthcare providers, health IT developers, academic researchers, patient safety organizations, liability insurers, professional societies, and patient advocates.

The Partnership for Health IT Patient Safety is sponsored in part through grants from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Jayne Koskinas Ted Giovanis Foundation (JKTG) for Health and Policy.

The "Health IT Safe Practices: The Safe Use of Health IT for Patient Identification" webinar is free, but space is limited and early registration is recommended.
