Alcantara Will Double Production in Next Five Years

Alcantara plans to double production of luxury material for its automotive, fashion, consumer-products and interior-design customers over the next five years.

Alcantara Chairman and CEO Andrea Boragno said the company will invest €300 million to roughly double the capacity of its Italian production facilities in Nera Montoro in Umbria, increasing employment by 33 percent from 598 in 2017 to nearly 800 by 2022.

Sales of Alcantara branded materials have grown from nearly 64.3 million in 2009 to an expected turnover of 185 million in 2016.

Boragno added that Interbrand, a leading brand consultancy, had estimated the company's brand value at 100 million in 2015, a more than 15-fold increase from Interbrand's valuation of 6.5 million for the company in 2006.

Alcantara®, an Italian-made luxury material well-known throughout Europe, has gained a solid foothold in recent years among designers in the fashion and auto industries in North America and the Asia Pacific region, reflecting the influence of millennials who value an environmentally responsible lifestyle.

"The many reasons for Alcantara's growth in sales include our company's reputation for 'Made in Italy' excellence and our strong commitment to sustainability and improving the environment," Boragno said. "We also have developed a privileged relationship with the world's design community because of the aesthetic qualities and almost infinite applications provided by our material."

The company expects 2016 fiscal-year sales to total nearly 18 million compared to about 165.2 million in 2015. Annual revenue has grown steadily from 64.3 million in 2009 to 110.7 million in 2013 and then 123.8 million in 2014.

Boragno pointed out that Alcantara invests nearly three percent of its annual revenue to research and development.

He noted that a growing number of well-known brands have chosen Alcantara to enhance their product offerings recently, including Master & Dynamics (headphones), Italian Independent (sunglasses), Swarovski (fashion accessories) and Microsoft (News - Alert) (keyboards).

Alcantara has been certified as "Carbon Neutral" since 2009, among the first companies in Europe and the very first Italian company to achieve carbon neutrality.
