"San Salvador is the newest of the Maritime Museum of San Diego's world-class collection of historic vessels, and one that provides a unique educational platform. This multi-year Pacific Heritage Tour and the San Salvador vessel serve as seafaring symbols of California's origin story and the history of America from a West Coast perspective. This truly is a rare opportunity for others to share the experience and be part of our rich maritime history," said Dr. Ray Ashley, Maritime Museum of San Dego President and CEO.

The 2017 Pacific Heritage Tour also includes an ocean-going excursion from Santa Barbara to the Channel Islands to San Diego (May 23-29). The sailing adventure includes seven days, six nights, meals and onboard accommodations. It is open to a limited number of passengers, ages 12 and up. While aboard, guests will see California through explorers' eyes, and join the crew for sailing lessons, shipboard activities including hands-on demonstrations of celestial navigation, cartography, and sail handling. This unique nautical experience is $1,542 per person. Group discounts are also available.

About San Salvador

The design and construction of the replica involved some of the world's leading historians and marine archeologists. The original galleon, later nicknamed "the Mayflower of the West," first sailed in 1542. Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a Spanish explorer who was searching for new trade routes from Mexico to Asia and Europe, sailed her along the California coastline. Among his discoveries was San Diego Bay, where the replica would be built more than 450 years later by hundreds of Maritime Museum of San Diego volunteers. The replica vessel weighs 150 tons and is 92 feet long and 24 feet wide.

Last year, record turnouts were recorded across California for Maritime Museum of San Diego's launch of the Pacific Heritage Tour. Collaborating with key institutions and organizations, the full-scale galleon replica San Salvador visited Oxnard, Monterey, Morro Bay, and the Channel Islands.

The 2016 Pacific Heritage Tour, sponsored by KPBS, included four West Coast venues. Each offered different planned events and immersive exhibits along with select fundraising and development opportunities for Channel Islands Maritime Museum, Monterey State Historic Park, and Central Coastal Maritime Museum Association.

General admission to the Maritime Museum of San Diego includes San Salvador dockside tours and for the explorer at heart, on select Saturdays, visitors 12 and up can step aboard San Salvador for a spectacular newly introduced 4-hour adventure day sail Saturday, March 25 and April 29. More day sails in San Diego will be available starting in June when San Salvador returns to her home port at the Maritime Museum of San Diego.
