Hartford HealthCare pioneers Mazor X™

HARTFORD, Conn., March 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Hartford HealthCare (HHC) has pioneered a new, advanced technology called Mazor X, a sophisticated surgical guidance system for spine procedures.

This new guidance platform will bring unprecedented precision to surgeons performing spine surgery and the patients they serve. The Mazor X system was developed to enhance predictability and improve patient outcomes. It enables surgeons to be more precise, more efficient, and reduce the overall risk rate of spinal surgery.

Hartford HealthCare is the first healthcare system in the state of Connecticut and throughout the Northeast to debut this technique. Physicians performed surgeries this week across Hartford HealthCare — at the Bone & Joint Institute at Hartford Hospital, MidState Medical Center and Hartford Hospital.

"We are innovators at Hartford HealthCare, and we have a long history of bringing the latest and most valuable technology to the patients and communities we serve," said Jeffrey Flaks, Hartford HealthCare President and Chief Operating Officer. "We believe technology is a true partner n care — enabling our talented experts to improve outcomes, enhance quality and deliver an exceptional experience for our patients. This is a fitting next step as we continue to pioneer guidance technology in healthcare."

Because it assists surgeons in pre-planning, the Mazor X system enables expert physicians to be even more precise and treat each patient differently. Through advanced 3-dimensional imaging, it also significantly improves the precise placement of surgical screws and implants during procedures. The technology features a suite of software-based tools to pre-operatively assess spinal alignment and implement full surgical planning — creating a total patient treatment strategy. A combination of biomechanical logic and virtual surgical tools with computerized alignment calculations streamline the process. The system also uses precision mechanics and a bed-attached, bone-mounted surgical arm to guide surgical tools. This enables predictable execution of each patient's surgical plan. Finally, surgeons utilize real-time 3D verification to confirm execution of the surgical plan using imaging systems.

Surgeons are currently using the Mazor X for spinal fusions to treat spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis. Patients with these conditions often suffer with debilitating symptoms like lower back pain, leg pain and sciatica. Over time, Hartford HealthCare will expand its use to thoracic and cervical vertebrae, and spinal deformities such as scoliosis.
