Northeastern University to Host 5th Annual Collegiate Alternative Investment Summit

The Northeastern University (News - Alert) Collegiate Alternative Investment Summit (CAIS), a conference organized by D'Amore-McKim School of Business students, will be held April 7-8, 2017, on the Northeastern University campus in Boston.

One of Boston's largest student-run alternative investment conferences, the two-day event will bring together students, academics and professionals from the private equity, hedge fund, venture capital and real assets industries to discuss ongoing and emerging industry issues, with the goal of bridging the gap between classroom education and professional application. Founded in 2013, the conference was developed to provide students with the opportunity to learn from and network with industry leaders, thus enhancing their academic knowledge of the asset class with real-world context and professional insight.

"CAIS is an outstanding event, providing unmatched insight and networks for students exploring careers in the alternative investment space," said Hugh Courtney, Dean of D'Amore-McKim School of Business. "CAIS exemplifies the best of Northeastern's experiential learning model in action, as it is designed, led and operated entirely by students for students. CAIS provides timely, relevant and insightful information on the alternative investment sector as it grows and redefines our global financial markets. We are pleased to be entering our fifth year of the conference and are looking forward to another intriguing and beneficial event for all participants."

A selection of keynote speakers will headline the event, including Henry Nasella, Partner at LNK Partners; Ted English, Executive Chairman of Bob's Discount Furniture; and Fran Janis, Founding Partner of Pomona Capital. In addition, an Alumni Panel will kick off the conference the evening of April 7, and will feature Lilly Xie, Analyst at Spinnaker Capital LLC; Martin Lemaire, Risk Analyst at Putnam Investments; Tarik Emara, Vice President of Private Equity at Citi; and Annemarie Murphy, Assistant Vice President at Boston Capital.

Presentation topics have been carefully chosen to cover a robust variety of industry specializations and trends, including different perspectives in private equity, partner-track in venture capital, investing in sustainability, frontiermarkets, merger arbitrage, and turnaround management. Both Alan S. McKim and Richard D'Amore, for whom the school of business is named, will participate in the conference. Mr. D'Amore, Partner at North Bridge Venture Partners, will moderate a fireside chat with Ms. Janis. Mr. McKim, CEO of Clean Harbors, Inc., will participate in the Investing in Sustainability panel.

"Each year, we host a pool of incredibly passionate and intelligent students with a keen interest in working in the private equity, venture capital and hedge fund industries, but more importantly, managing and raising funds of their own one day," said Nicholas F. Lara, Chairman and Founder of CAIS. "With successful tech exits among the likes of Facebook (News - Alert), Snap, and Alibaba, students come to CAIS to gain more insight and ask questions surrounding how they can become investors in the next wave of rumored exits. Creating a forum where students and accomplished academics and investors can engage is the key to preparing the next generation of financers with the necessary tools to navigate our constantly evolving markets."

"CAIS provides students and professionals from across the country with an opportunity to engage with leaders in the alternative investment industry," said Lauren Tawfik, D'Amore-McKim School of Business Class of 2018 and Co-President of CAIS. "This year marks the fifth anniversary of the event, and our team has been working tirelessly to create a line-up filled with seasoned experts in private equity, venture capital, hedge funds, and real assets. We are looking forward to a weekend filled with thought-provoking conversations and meaningful networking opportunities for attendees and speakers alike."

Sponsors of CAIS are acclaimed members of the financial and academic communities, including BackBay Communications, Northeastern University Center for Financial Independence, Scotiabank, Northeastern University Office of Alumni Relations, CAIA Association, D'Amore-McKim School of Business, Wall Street Oasis and PitchBook.
