CloudApp Introduces "Annotate" to Speed Up Millennial Workflow

CloudApp, the visual communication platform that uses GIFs, HD screencasts, and screen captures to help technical teams easily explain abstract or difficult concepts with the quick swipe of a mouse, today announced a new product built for and around the millennial workflow of visual communication, called Annotate. To support the development and invest in the future of work, the startup received a $3M (News - Alert) total with help from Bloomberg Beta.

In 2015, Pew Research found that Millennials officially surpassed Baby Boomers as the largest generation in the U.S. labor force. Millennials, who already have a built-in social workflow based around visual content consumption with Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, make up 1 in 3 employees. With 2.5B people communicating online and 2B knowledge workers according to Dropbox's (News - Alert) COO, there is a need for streamlined communications that everyone understands and can easily use.

Enter, Annotate. Annotate is a cross platform application that captures GIFs, video and screenshots in the cloud and allows for quick and easy annotations with emojis. Since images and videos are able to deliver deeper communication than text, they in turn accelerate the workflows of information workers. Much like Snapchat, Annotate visuals are quick, can be simply marked up and the sender has control over the duration of the content. The service allows users to quickly give feedback by highlighting areas of a screen and quickly sharing a link to get their point across faster and instantly get input. The tool is for teams: designers, engineers, product managers. The capture can then be easily shared in workflows and places like Slac, Zendesk, Trello, JIRA, email and more.

"The future of work is visual. According to 3M, 90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual, and visuals are processed 60,000X faster in the brain than text, but everyone is still typing," said Tyler Koblasa, CEO of CloudApp. "Visual is a universal language and screen capture is the future of input. With all of the recent data showcasing the rise of visual and image sharing for communication, it makes sense to bring this efficiency into the workplace."

Over the next 4 years, the American workforce is expected to grow to be 40% freelancers, according to Intuit's 2020 Report. These future teams built on the backs of distributed teams will only further expedite the communication problems of today. Being able to share quick feedback or explain something is all the harder when you can't just stand next to someone and dictate to them how to do something.

In addition to distributed teams, the concept of visual communications remains key. According to Mary Meeker's 2016 Internet Trend report, video and image sharing is on the rise with more people engaging with Snapchat and Instagram versus text heavy applications like LinkedIn (News - Alert) and Sharepoint. HubSpot's social-media scientist Dan Zarrella found tweets with images are 94% more likely to be retweeted than tweets without. There's no doubt that visual content consumption is more effective.

"I use CloudApp multiple times per day to convey design and functionality changes to our development teams," said Kevin Rose, former General Partner at Google (News - Alert) Ventures and founder of Digg. "It's the fastest tool I've found to share and annotate ideas."

"At Bloomberg Beta, we're looking for companies that can change the way we work," said James Chan, Partner at Bloomberg (News - Alert) Beta. "CloudApp works well as a personal productivity tool for designers and product managers but they can change the way that everyone works--from customer support to sales to finance--by clarifying communications and eliminating meetings."

CloudApp is the only visual communication & sharing service that is able to replace tedious text chats with GIFs, HD videocasts and screenshots built on a secure platform with full search functionality, customizable sharing permissions, and deep analytics making it a unique offering to the market. "We are transforming the future of work (flow). With screen capture as the future of input on connected devices," said Koblasa. "CloudApp's vision is to enhance productivity by hijacking the screen capture experience, using visuals to easily explain...anything."
