IRI Expert Provides 2016 Year-End Results on Beer Category and Craft Beer Segment

IRI:

WHO:

Dan Wandel, Principal, Beverage Alcohol, Client Insights, IRI®

WHAT:

Beer category sales increased modestly in 2016, based on the strength of the import, craft and flavored malt beverage segments as well as new product offerings throughout the category. However, craft beer sales slowed significantly in comparison to previous years. IRI's beverage alcohol expert, Dan Wandel, will examine how the beer category and craft segment performed during 2016 in his presentation, "Turn the Page," during the Brewers Association Power Hour interactive teleconference.

WHY:

The craft segment has been one of the true success stories in both the beverage alcohol and consumer packaged goods industries for many years. However, 2016 proved to be a challenging year for craft beer. Wandel's presentation will examine the challenges craft beer faced as well as steps the segment can take for continued success. He will address such critical questions as:

• What were the sales trends for the beer category and its segments in 2016? How did this compare against wine and spirits?

• How are the high-end segments across the beverage alcohol category performing from a sales perspective?

• How did craft IPA sales finish the year? What sub-styles within craft IPA gained the most share within total IPA sales?

• What happened to craft seasonal sales in 2016?

• What were the top new beer brands in 2016?

• How big of an impact did innovation have on the beer category in 2016?

• Did the beer category continue to see flavored beer sales increase?

• How much did hard sodas contribute to beer's sales growth in 2016?
