Critical Diabetes Legislation Supported By Clinical Endocrinologists Clears House Vote, Headed To Senate For PassageThe U.S. House of Representatives took a crucial step forward towards improving the care and well-being of Americans suffering from diabetes and its consequences with today's passage of the National Clinical Care Commission Act (H.R. 309), a legislative priority advocated by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and the diabetes community at-large. The House vote paves the way for early action by the Senate during the 115th Congress. The bill, which is intended to maximize the efficiencies of federal programs involved with the diagnosis and treatment of metabolic, autoimmune and insulin-resistant diseases, particularly diabetes and its many complications, was reintroduced in the House on January 5 by Rep. Pete Olson (News - Alert) (R-22-TX) and 18 original co-sponsors. The National Clinical Care Commission Act calls for the creation of a public/private collaborative of the country's foremost researchers, clinical healthcare professionals and patient advocates to evaluate existing federally administered diabetes, metabolic and autoimmune disease initiatives in order to improve the coordination and implementation of these programs and improve patient care. The legislation will be reintroduced in the Senate by co-sponsors Sen. Jeane Shaheen (D-NH) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME). In addition to broad bipartisan support for the legislation both in the House and Senate, more than 40 organizations representing physicians, allied healthcare professionals, patients, community-based and industry organizations have joined AACE in advocating for passage of this legislation.
