Enbala Power Networks and AutoGrid Rank as Leading Virtual Power Plant Software Vendors in Navigant Research Assessment

A new Leaderboard report from Navigant Research examines the strategy and execution of 15 leading vendors of virtual power plant (VPP) software, providing industry participants with an objective assessment of these companies' relative strengths and weaknesses.

A VPP is a smart grid network that links retail markets to wholesale markets, with the primary goal of achieving the greatest profit for distributed energy resources (DER) asset owners while maintaining the proper balance of the electricity grid at the lowest economic and environmental cost. VPPs are expected to gain importance in the coming years, and software is expected to represent nearly 90 percent of total VPP implementation spending by 2025. Click to tweet: According to a new Leaderboard report from @NavigantRSRCH, in terms of strategy and execution, Enbala Power Networks and AutoGrid are the leading vendors of VPP software.

"Enbala Power Networks and AutoGrid qualified as Leaders in this assessment-both of them pure software providers-yet, the majority of companies ranked are very closely clustered in the Contender category, with three additional companies are ranked as Challengers," says Peter Asmus, principal research analyst with Navigant Research. "Each one of the 15 companies profiled in the report has the potential to become a Leader within the next three years, and those that make software the focus of their offerings for DER management will have the upper hand, as will companies that learn how to better integrate diverse products and solutions into a coherent solution set."

According to the report, perhaps the most foretelling trend with VPPs is the sudden surge in energy storage deployments being aggregated into VPPs, tilting the market in new directions. As a group, energy storage vendors ranked highest among the three main categories of companies profiled, which also included pure software providers and large technology multi-nationals.

The report, Navigant Research Leaderboard Report: Virtual Power Plant Software Vendors, examines the strategy and execution of 15 leading VPP software vendors. These players are rated on 12 criteria: vision; go-to market strategy; partners; products integration strategy, technology scope; geographic reach; sales, marketing, and distribution; product performance; product quality and reliability; project portfolio; pricing; and staying power. Using Navigant Research's proprietary Leaderboard methodology, VPP software vendors are profiled, rated, and ranked with the goal of providing an objective assessment of their relative strengths and weaknesses in the global VPP market. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.
