Patented Technology Puts Cirrus Data Migration Server in "Untouchable" Class

Cirrus Data Solutions (CDS), a leader in data migration, data acceleration and data protection, today announced it has successfully developed patented technology that will eliminate the need to physically touch or move fibre channel (FC) cables during the appliance deployment/insertion phase of the data migration process. The new technology, known as the logical insertion method, will simplify and accelerate the migration process for thousands of enterprises with large or shared data centers that face strict processes for change approval.

This latest patent marks the sixth unique technology patent to be filed on behalf of Cirrus' Data Migration Server (DMS) and the first time that any company has been able to offer a touch-free migration method. Until now, Cirrus' Transparent Datapath Intercept (TDI (News - Alert)) method-while the most advanced migration method in the industry-still required that physical cables be plugged and unplugged in order to facilitate the port spoofing needed to intercept data paths. After encountering several customer engagements where physical movement of the Fibre Channel cables was prohibited without a lengthy approval cycle, the Cirrus engineering team asked itself: How can we achieve the same transparent insertion process without touching the production cables? The result was the logical insertion method.

The logical insertion method allows the DMS to be transparently inserted into active data paths using the DMS insertion wizard by controlled execution f auto-generated switch commands displayed by the wizard. No physical cables are touched or moved; the DMS appliance is connected to the FC switch ports and a Logical Switch (aka, VSAN) is used to encapsulate the host or storage ports being intercepted without having to make any LUN masking changes or FC Zone changes to the existing production SAN environment. This process allows enterprises to quickly obtain change approvals for the deployment of the DMS appliance to migrate large amounts of data with ease.

This latest patented feature in the DMS appliance currently supports both Brocade Logical Switches and Cisco's (News - Alert) VSAN. The ability to perform transparent datapath intercept using both physical and logical insertion methods allows enterprises more flexibility in how they migrate data, and further advances the DMS appliance as the simplest, most user-friendly and risk-free migration appliance on the market today.

Supporting Quotes:

"The logical insertion method provides maximum flexibility and scalability for planning and executing mass data migration. In large environments, hosts can be selectively migrated, leaving the rest of the storage environment untouched and unaffected. This, the sixth patent to be granted to CDS, is another great achievement for our world-class engineering staff."
-- Wai Lam, Chief Technology Officer, Cirrus Data Solutions

"We're the first company to offer this logical insertion method. Our competitors don't do this. They're still advocating complex LUN masking changes and zone changes. We're advocating simplicity by solving complex, real-world challenges for our customers."
-- Wayne Lam, Chief Executive Officer, Cirrus Data Solutions
