Caribbean Telecommunications Report Q4 2016

NEW YORK, Nov. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- View:

We have not made significant revisions to our Caribbean outlook in the Q416 report. We retain the view that increasing competition in the Caribbean telecoms markets has potential to enhance innovation and improve customer choice. The announcement in May 2016 that Jamaica had launched a third mobile operator increases the prospects of competition in that market. Jamaica's mobile market is currently a duopoly between Digicel and LIME. Although the arrival of a third mobile operator would help to shake up the Trinidad & Tobago mobile market, we still expect the process to take years to play out as licence fees are agreed, spectrum allocated, networks deployed and services launched. Haiti and Cuba represent the largest organic growth opportunities in the region as both are significantly underdeveloped compared to their peers. However, the risks associated with business in these two markets mean that a mobile subscription boom is far from likely

Latest Updates & Industry Developments

- Cayman Islands has the highest mobile penetration at around 155% in H116, while Cuba's penetration rate remains below the regional average at under 31%. Haiti and Cuba will both be excellent growth markets over the course of our forecast period.

- In May 2016 it was announced that Jamaica would get a new mobile operator to challenge the market duopoly of Digicel and Flow. Jamaica's mobile customer base is expected to grow to almost 3.57mn mobile customers by 2020.

- In March 2016 Trinidad & Tobago ISP Massy Communications (Massy) launched fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) and IPTV services. Competition is heating in Trinidad & Tobago's pay-TV sector as Massy and Digicel scale up to compete effectively with legacy players.
