Mellanox InfiniBand to Accelerate the New National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) Supercomputer

Mellanox (News - Alert)® Technologies, Ltd. (NASDAQ: MLNX), a leading supplier of end-to-end interconnect solutions for data center servers and storage systems, today announced that the Australian National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) has chosen Mellanox's 100Gbit/s EDR InfiniBand interconnect for its new Lenovo (News - Alert) NextScale supercomputer. The new system will deliver a 40 percent performance increase in NCI computational capacity starting in January 2017. The solution will leverage the Mellanox smart interconnect and In-Network Computing technology to maximize applications performance, efficiency and scalability.

NCI is a national provider of high-performance research computing and data services. NCI systems currently support around 4,000 researchers undertaking over 500 projects. These researchers come from more than 34 Australian Universities, national science agencies and medical research institutes, with an increasing industry user base. The new supercomputer will complement the wide range of computational resources available through NCI and will provide a major boost in capability for their users.

"We have growing number of research and industry projects demanding more compute and storage capabilities, and the new supercomputer will enable us to deliver to their needs," said Professor Lindsay Botten, Director, National Computational Infrastructure. "InfiniBand enables our system to be more efficient and deliver higher performance, but no less important, it also enables us to connect to our existing infrastructure and maximize our investments."

"Lenovo is incredibly proud of its credentials in the HPC space in Australia and New Zealand," said Rob Makin, Group Director, DCG, Lenovo ANZ. "Lenovo's new NeXtScale technology is designed specifically for the high-performance compute industry and is scalable, energy efficient and robust. Lenovo is proud to be helping power the next generation of research at the Australian National Computational Infrastructure and we watch with interest to see the discoveries and advancements that are made as a result of this partnership," Makin added.

"We are proud to enable NCI with the most advanced InfiniBand solutions to accelerate the center computational capabilities," said Gilad Shainer, vice president marketing at Mellanox Technologies. "The new In-Network Computing technology delivers breakthrough performance for high-performance computing applications, whichwill increase the research capabilities NCI users need."

"The new supercomputer is a results of a great collaboration between XENON Systems, Lenovo and Mellanox," said Dragan Dimitrovici, Managing Director, XENON Systems. "The new supercomputer leverages best of bread technology to deliver unmatchable performance, efficiency and robustness. We look forward to continue and enhance the supercomputing capabilities in Australia and beyond."
