Honeywell Brings "Big Bang" Nobel Laureate To Romania To Inspire Students To Pursue Science And Engineering

TIMISOARA, Romania, Oct. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) brought Nobel Laureate Robert W. Wilson to Universitatea Politehnica Timi?oara (UPT) today for a two-day program of inspirational discussions and interactions with students on how they can achieve their career goals in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Nobel Laureate Bob Wilson, who discovered the cosmic microwave background radiation caused by the Big Bang that began the universe, visits a Polytech University with Honeywell in western Romania today. He will be inspiring students to pursue careers in science and technology.

More than 3,000 students and teachers were in attendance at the Honeywell Initiative for Science & Engineering (HISE), an award-winning program managed by Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company's corporate citizenship initiative. HISE is a global program that gives students hands-on exposure to physics and chemistry laureates and Honeywell's top technologists and engineers in multiple, highly interactive sessions.

"At Universitatea Politehnica Timisoara, we are committed to supporting all initiatives that contribute to developing well-rounded, globally competitive leaders, and we trust that meeting a Nobel laureate will have a significant impact on our students and their professional future," said Viorel-Aurel Serban, Rector, UPB. "We believe the collaboration between academia and the business world is key to the economic, social and cultural development of Romania, and we are delighted to welcome Honeywell to our campus."

Paul-Marian Caramidariu, Honeywell Life Safety Site Leader, Lugoj, Romania, noted, "As the digital revolution continues to build, we need more software engineers to drive productivity, wealth, and higher standards of living around the world.  Honeywell is uniquely positioned to blend physical products with software t support connected systems that improve homes, buildings, factories, utilities, vehicles and aircraft.

"Honeywell is proud of our long-standing partnership with UPT, a first-class university with a rich academic record and the ability to cultivate the next generation of engineers who will distinguish themselves as role models of excellence and international competitiveness," he added.

Dr. Wilson is an American astronomer who received the 1978 Nobel Prize in physics for the 1963 discovery of the cosmic microwave background radiation caused by the Big Bang that began the universe nearly 15 billion years ago. The discovery served as important evidence to support the theory that the universe is expanding.

He is a senior scientist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is among 27 Nobel laureates that Honeywell has sponsored at universities worldwide since 2006. This is the second time the program is being delivered to a Romanian university, and the first time a Nobel laureate will present to the students of UPT as part of Honeywell's growth strategy in Romania's western region.

Since 2006, Honeywell has brought the HISE program to top universities in China, the Czech Republic, India, Malaysia and Mexico. The initiative includes a series of lectures by Nobel laureates, career discussions with Honeywell's top engineers, and informal discussions between the laureates and students. Honeywell also sponsors scholarships, research and development projects, and intern opportunities for university students.

In addition to HISE, Honeywell Hometown Solutions invites middle school teachers from Romania to the Honeywell Educators at Space Academy and the Honeywell Green Boot Camp in the United States each year.
