RSR Corporation Announces Installation of State-of-the-Art Technology to Reduce Lead Emissions


Revere Smelting and Refining Corporation - RSR - one of America's leading lead smelting and lead battery recycling companies, today announced the installation of a Wet Electrostatic Precipitator (WESP) at its facility in Middleton, New York. The installation, which becomes fully operational as the nation recognizes Lead Poisoning Prevention Week - October 23 - 29, 2016, adds to the list of such facilities in the RSR portfolio joining others located at City of Industry in California and Indianapolis, Indiana. The new Middleton facility has the capacity to reduce lead emissions by as much as 95 percent, significantly exceeding existing government environmental standards for such operations.

Using WESP technology, RSR has cut its emissions of lead in each of its locations and exceeded compliance with the revised National Ambient (News - Alert) Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for lead. The use of this innovative technology is key to improving the environment, creating green jobs, and differentiating RSR as one of the cleanest lead battery recycling companies in the world.

Currently, RSR is the only company in the lead smelting industry to have fully adopted and installed WESP technologies at all of its facilities.



WESP facilities are a class of air pollution control equipment generally considered to be particulate removal devices. As designed and installed by RSR, however, WESP technology has the capacity to remove multiple types of acid gases as well as particulate matter. The battery recycling process emits both kinds of materials. With WESP, RSR virtually eliminates emissions of lead, arsenic, and other pollutants.

Although WESP has been around for decades, it has only recently been implemented in a few secondary lead smelters. RSR has been leading the charge in the lead recycling industry investing millions of dollars nationwide to retrofit all of its facilities to take full advantage of this new technology.


RSR first installed WESP technology four years ago at its Quemetco facility in Southern California. There, WESP has reduced lead emissions to one percent of previous levels -- from 614.96 lbs. emitted per year to less than 5 lbs. per year - and reduced over 90% of arsenic, nickel and cadmium emissions. Following the successful implementation of WESP in California and later Indianapolis, RSR moved forward with plans for the installation at its Middleton, NY facility.

RSR believes the battery recycling industry bears a moral obligation to implement controls and standards that reflect the best possible air pollution control technologies currently available. The reality, however, is that while RSR has used Wet Electrostatic Precipitators to cut lead emissions from 450 pounds annually to just 9 pounds, many other secondary lead smelters continue to use pollution control equipment that was last considered state of the art more than three decades ago.
