Automotive Parental Control System - Market Drivers and Forecast from Technavio

Technavio analysts forecast the global automotive parental control system (PCS) market to grow at a CAGR of more than 11% during the forecast period, according to their latest report.

The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global automotive PCS market for 2016-2020. The report only lists the key vendors in the market and does not present the market share of all vendors in the market.

The very basis of the PCS offerings to be given by major carmakers is the high incidence of car accidents involving teenage drivers. While there have been studies about teenage drunk driving and correlations drawn with the number of deaths as a result of rash driving, there have been only a few in-depth studies conducted that explicitly link the teenage cohort with car accident deaths.

The OnStar service for GM started in 1995. Since then, OnStar, with the FamilyLink offering, has expanded its portfolio of product offerings to include a wide portfolio of features of PCS, including email/message alerts, location tracking, trip data recording as well as accident logs (AL). FamilyLink also incorporates some of the range limiting features such as off-limit areas and boundary usage. The creation of a report card by OnStar, which monitors the driving behavior of teen drivers, is considered a hallmark of achievement by most of the parents of teenage drivers.

"GM's Chevrolet Teen Driver mode was launched in the Chevrolet Malibu 2016 edition. Teen driver incorporates some of the rarest of teen-oriented features, including passenger limit and stereo volume limiters and locks. The teen driver mode is activated by the seat belt warnings, which immediately shuts down the stereo if the seat belts are not put on," says Siddharth Jaiswal, one of the lead automotive electronics analysts at Technavio.

Technavio analysts highlight the following three factors that are contributing to the growth of the global automotive PCS market:

  • Growing acceptance of PCS by teenagers to augment current sales
  • Associated safety factors accompanying PCS to help drive sales
  • Teenager-targeted pro-safety-oriented PCS laws could favorably impact growth of this market

Growing acceptance of PCS by teenagers to augment current sales

Technavio's research reveals the fact that, currently, teenagers are less rebellious towards the use of PCS by their parents to monitor them while out driving without the physical presence of one of the parents or another adult. According to several online survey results accessed by Technavio, nearly 64% of all US teenagers are likely to agree to supervision via PCS when out with the family car.

The reason can be attributed to the growing incidence of parents withholding driving permissions or severely restricting the usage of the family car without the presence of at least an adult chaperone. Teenagers have naturally responded by agreeing to the placement of PCS in the cars they drive. According to several online accounts, teenagers consider their agreeing to the PCS supervision as a relatively small price to pay for being allowed to use the car.

Associated safety factors accompanying PCS to help drive sales

It has been observed that the use of PCS promotes safer driving habits among teenagers, particularly the use of seat belts. Even though the restrictions on using seat belt have only been a recent addition to the suite of systems under the guidance of PCS, teenagers who had PCS installed in their vehicles have been found to be twice as vigilant about safer driving than their non-PCS counterparts. According to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, teenagers with PCS installed in their cars have been found to take fewer driving risks and are less prone to showing off.

Over-speeding was found out to be a defining factor in 33% of fatal teenager-involved car crashes in 2011 according to a report by Governors Highway Association of the US. This was seen to decline significantly in certain studies, once PCS came into the picture. Hence, in addition to the parental control over driving boundaries and exclusions, PCS helps to reduce the number of instances of speeding as well.

Teenager-targeted pro-safety-oriented PCS laws could favorably impact growth of this market

"Currently, teenagers are involved in around 30% of the number of car accidents in the US and other developed nations, which is quite an alarming statistic and the major focus of governmental campaigns for road safety are naturally teenagers," asserts Siddharth.

Apart from campaigns, there have been requests from parental lobbies that the issue with vehicular accident death be looked upon by the government. These lobbies demand a complete ban on driving permissions to underage persons. Moreover, it is anticipated that, with the commercial usage of PCS gaining mainstream popularity, governments of many countries may enact laws to make sure that PCS comes as a standard fitment in all vehicles from now on.
