Global Automotive Haptic Accelerator Pedal Market to Grow at a CAGR of Over 23% Through 2020, Reports Technavio

Technavio analysts forecast the global automotive haptic accelerator pedal market to grow at a CAGR of more than 23% during the forecast period, according to their latest report.

The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global automotive haptic accelerator pedal market for 2016-2020. To understand and calculate the automotive haptic accelerator market, the market has been derived from the overall passenger cars market that are equipped with haptic accelerator pedals. The overall passenger car market refers to the OEM production volumes of passenger cars.

The application of haptic technology in automotive mechanics stems from the functional benefits of such technology, which may attract more players and in time gradually build a platform for this market.

Technavio automotive analysts highlight the following three factors that are contributing to the growth of the global automotive haptic accelerator pedal market:

  • Dynamic response systems can enhance fuel efficiency by 7%
  • Need to curb driver distraction from on-board electronics and other gadgets
  • Haptic feedback's ability to curb unnecessary speed

Dynamic response system can enhance fuel efficiency by 7%

The drive toward connected cars and autonomous vehicles is dominated by the dynamic response capabilities of the vehicle. Steer-by-wire, shift-by-wire, throttle-by-wire, and automated manual transmission (AMT (News - Alert)) among others are replacing a vehicle's manual systems. All of these are enabled by advancements in sensor technologies and this has paved the way for improvements in pedal sensors as well. The need to improve the performance of the vehicle through dynamic driving interfaces and human machine interface (HMI) remains key focus areas in the development of future vehicles and in improving the functional goals of present vehicles.

This is possible through the deployment of appropriate dynamic response systems enabled by rapidly developing sensor technologies (which are in turn driving the market for haptic accelerator pedal market). This is also cited as the reason underlying the observed replaceent of potentiometer pedal sensors with magnetic and inductive pedal sensors. Haptics feedback can clearly help to assess the optimum gear shift point and empowers the driver with self-acting mechanisms. Such technologies have demonstrated clear benefits in terms of fuel efficiency to the tune of approximately 7%-8%.

Need to curb driver distraction from on-board electronics and other gadgets

Several studies indicate that though there have been significant improvements in engines, transmissions, and powertrains, it is certainly the drivers' driving behavior that can leverage the vehicles' maximum technological capabilities in terms of capturing the best fuel efficiency. To address this, the industry already has the use of communication systems that indicate to the driver through a flashing light or a message on touch screens/dashboards the necessary modification required to the driving style. Simultaneously attending to vehicle-generated messages being displayed on the dashboard can be a risky proposition. Therefore, a mechanism that can provide warning and necessary feedback at the source itself (accelerator pedal), can minimize the effects of driver distraction. In addition, the signal at the pedal is considered less disturbing or distracting than sound or light.

According to Siddharth Jaiswal, a lead analyst at Technavio for automotive electronics, "Haptic accelerator pedals will address the problem of driver distraction to a great extent. The fact that such devices offer appropriate resistive force when unwanted excessive pressure is applied on the accelerator pedal may help overcome any challenges associated with the usage of the system, and may help the driver to prevail over any unsafe road conditions."

Haptic feedback's ability to curb unnecessary speed

As per the 2015 records from WHO, road traffic accidents cause 1.25 million fatalities every year. It is also estimated that 90% of these fatalities occur in low and middle-income countries though these countries account for only half of the world's vehicle population.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development published by the United Nations has established a target to reduce the global number of deaths and injuries from road traffic crashes by half by the year 2020. Consequently, 17 countries have aligned their laws with best practices for driving vehicles. These laws pertain to seat-belts, drink-driving, speed, motorcycle helmets, and child restraints. However, the Global Status Report on Road Safety (2015) indicates that the pace of change is slow and recommends urgent action be taken to achieve the ambitious target.

The World Health Organization designates speed as one of the most critical risk factors leading to road fatalities, in addition to other key risk factors such as distracted driving and drink-driving, among others. "The urgent need to curb the road fatalities is expected to be a key driver for the automotive haptic accelerator pedal market as it will help a great deal in curbing the most critical risk associated with speeding vehicles based on its ability to assess road scenarios when integrated with advanced driver assistance systems such as anti-collision systems," says Siddharth.
