Frost & Sullivan Lauds Alcatel-Lucent's Cyber Security Technologies which Protect Universal Data Traffic Traversing Utilities' Networks

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Dec. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of cyber security solutions for the utilities market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Alcatel-Lucent with the 2015 North American Frost & Sullivan Award for New Product Innovation. Alcatel-Lucent's cyber security technology enables the protection of universal data traffic types through encryption at multiple layers. This unique technology applies encryption at the Internet Protocol (IP) layer as a typical IPSec gateway does, or at the multi-protocol label switching (MPLS), optical, and microwave layers. This approach enables power utilities to more effectively protect their grids and operations from cyber attacks.

While Alcatel-Lucent's Network Group Encryption (NGE) performs encryption at the MPLS layer for many data types, its wavelength encryption protects all traffic at the optical layer. The NGE and wavelength encryption fully leverage the MPLS and optical layers' resiliency features. Alcatel-Lucent's products are built for very high reliability through redundant equipment design and automatic protection switching.

When it comes to design, Alcatel-Lucent's IP/MPLS platform is also noteworthy. The platform's security features can scale to meet utilities' requirements, while retaining the needed forwarding performance for critical applications such as teleprotection relay.

Superior strategies and a product suite consisting of various components, including the 7705 Service Aggregation Router (SAR), 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) and 9500 Microwave Packet Radio (MPR), enable Alcatel-Lucent to offer a premium cyber security solution to utilities effectively tailored to the broad range of utility applications. Besides providing comprehensive encryption capabilities, the company's solution offers security features such as a Quality of Service-enabled and service-aware stateful firewall, Network Address Translation (NAT), and multi-purpose access control lists.

"Significantly, all Alcatel-Lucent's capabilities and product features are managed centrally with a policy-based approach from a multi-layer, service-aware manager, the 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM)," said Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Avimanyu Basu. "There is also a Service Portal Express for Utilities manaement system, which is essentially a portal that works on the top of 5620 SAM to simplify daily tasks."

Through integrating security capabilities such as encryption into all of its platforms for utilities, Alcatel-Lucent has successfully improved network reliability with fewer devices, less space and power. This innovation is particularly useful in facilities such as utility substations and makes the Alcatel-Lucent cyber security solution very cost effective.

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has developed an innovative element in a product by leveraging leading-edge technologies. The award recognizes the value-added features/benefits of the product and the increased ROI it offers customers, which, in turn, increases customer acquisition and overall market penetration potential.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis and extensive secondary research to identify best practices in the industry.
