Minister Carr Tours Smart Grid Electric Vehicle Charging Project at BC Institute of Technology

BURNABY, BC, Sept. 14, 2016 /CNW/ - Advancing clean technology is a key component of the Government's approach to promoting sustainable economic growth while addressing climate change.

Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Jim Carr, today toured the smart grid electric vehicle charging site at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and recognized the project as an example of how innovation in clean technology will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector and to move Canada toward a low-carbon economy over time.

The Government of Canada contributed $4.4 million to this demonstration microgrid system, which collecs solar energy, converts it into electrical energy, and stores it in lithium ion batteries that are used to power electric vehicle charging stations at BCIT's Burnaby Campus.

Quote

"This project is a demonstration of how clean technology can help reduce emissions, protect the environment and generate employment opportunities. I congratulate the BC Institute of Technology for being early adopters of electric vehicles and their supporting infrastructure.  Projects like this are a beacon of innovation in the Canadian clean energy industry, which our Government will continue to support."
