Adoption Rates of TBW Systems Will Surge with the Implementation of Rapid Powertrain Electrification in Vehicles: Technavio

Technavio analysts forecast the global automotive throttle-by-wire (TBW) system market to grow at a CAGR of close to 5% during the forecast period, according to their latest report.

The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global automotive throttle-by-wire-system market for 2016-2020. The geographical segmentation is done on the basis of global production growth by region with concentration on the key countries and continents of growth for TBW systems. The report considered the APAC and North America as the major growth areas for automotive TBW systems.

Globally, the status quo in geographic penetration of TBW systems should remain stable over the forecast period with Asia capturing more than 50% of the market share. It is estimated that India, China, Japan, and Indonesia shall account for a bulk of the new vehicle purchases (equipped with TBW technology) in the coming years.

"Rapid economic development in APAC has boosted per-capita income in recent years and this has increased the purchasing power of consumers leading to higher automobile sales. Additionally, increased economic growth in most countries in this region has boosted spending on infrastructure and industrial development, and such factors have pushed demand for heavy commercial vehicles. The ever-growing economic situation of countries in APAC makes the region one of the fastest and largest automotive markets globally," says Siddhart Jaiswal, a lead analyst at Technavio for automotive electronics research.

Technavio automotive analysts categorize the global automotive TBW system market into regulatory drivers and technological drivers. These segments have been sub-divided into the following:

Regulatory drivers

Higher fuel efficiency and emission control norms to drive higher adoption rates of TBW systems: Many countries are working to implement strict emission norms in response to environmental and health concerns. Moreoer, the use of TBW is better than throttle-by-cable (TBC) systems in the new emission regime. TBC systems produce an enriched air-fuel mixture which, even though good for acceleration (the 0-60 in x second variety) and speed-junkies, produces relatively higher amounts of unburnt hydrocarbons.

Improved vehicular throttle response during uphill driving to drive TBW sales: The intervention to the electronic throttling angle (ETA) calculations done by the electronic control unit (ECU) modifies the raw pedal input to a large extent. This modification creates an artificial throttle response which seems out of sync with pedal depression. TBW systems possess this feature, which assist drivers during uphill climbing. Moreover, fine tuning of this system also depends upon the adoption of the PT/SMCT based ETA fine tuning characteristics which Technavio expects to become standard within the forecast period. This improvement is expected to increase the adoption rates of TBW systems.

Technological drivers

Rapid powertrain electrification in vehicles to drive TBW adoption rates: Electrification of vehicles, in the form of powertrain, infotainment, connected vehicles, safety systems and electronics, among others is a trend which has been ongoing for quite some time. It is expected that this trend is going to continue in the forecast period, leading to a wider replacement of mechanical systems with electronics alternatives.

Advent of autonomous vehicle technology (AVT) to drive TBW proliferation: Various OEMs and tire suppliers have developed a vision of autonomous vehicle that can drive itself without a driver. Earlier, this ambitious project was expected to be commercially viable only in the next 10-12 years. Automakers had nevertheless introduced partial autonomous features such as automatic parking systems which hinge on more than one million lines of computer code and a whole system of semiconductors.

Connected vehicle technology and the internet of things to drive TBW sales: Initially, the automotive digital technology was primarily focused on optimizing the vehicle's internal functions until a few years back; however, the focus has shifted toward technologies which are primarily involved in developing the car's ability to connect with other vehicles and devices to enhance the driving experience. As per Technavio's research, approximately 60% of all vehicles on the road are expected to be equipped with connected technologies by the year 2025.
