Institutions, Providers Look To Harness IoT's Power In The Hopes Of Cutting Costs

With Internet of Things (IoT) technology recently garnering more mainstream attention, many institutions and providers are looking to harness IoT's power with an eye on cutting costs, according to the latest edition of the PYMNTS.com Internet of Things Tracker.

This report, done collaboratively with Intel, a leading maker of processors and other innovative technology, focuses on news and trends from around the IoT space. In July, IoT's money-saving powers were showcased as government entities and homeowners looked at how integrated technology can be an effective budget monitor.

The U.S. Department of State has announced it will deploy the C3 (News - Alert) IoT, an IoT platform that specializes in providing Software as a Service apps that help with energy conservation, at many of the institutions they oversee. The government agency hopes the C3 will assist with identifying energy issues, monitoring sensors, while also conserving resources.

Meanwhile, the Nest Thermostat, an IoT-powere home energy system, recently released a new money-saving feature to help homeowners stay within their cooling and heating budgets. Nest users with Time of Use rate plans now have the ability to access the Time of Savings feature, which allows the device to know how much consumers are typically charged for energy each month. The thermostat can then adjust itself to make sure its users are conserving both energy and money.

In the Tracker Scorecard, 90 profiles were created for companies that provide IoT solutions in four categories: applications, devices, enabling technology and data. Each company was then identified as offering products and/or services in at least one category including: data, devices, infrastructure, payments, security and software.

The scorecard also saw 10 additions this month including: Alarm.com (News - Alert), Ayla Networks, C3 IoT, Five Element Robotics, Kepware, Local Motors, Lofelt, Nest, Vinaya and WISeKey.

Other highlights in the tracker include:

• Interviews with Dave Spencer, Buick's Advertising Manager, and Rich Martinek, Global OnStar's Senior Marketing Manager, to discuss how Buick is breaking away from its antiquated image and making cars IoT connected.

• Samsung (News - Alert) recently announced its initial strategies for implementing its 'Human-Centered IoT' vision. The company plans to spend $1.2 billion between now and 2020 on U.S.-based IoT research and development. The initiative is being led by Samsung Research America, Global Innovation Center and Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center.

• Wearable creator Vinaya announced the development of ZENTA, an IoT-powered device being touted as "the world's first biometric-sensing wearable for both body and mind." ZENTA, which is worn on the wrist, tracks the wearer's physical activity, breathing patterns, stress levels, sleep quality and more to generate a digital health assessment, which can be monitored and managed through an app.
