Digital Mining in Australia

LONDON, July 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Amongst the 20 high-level speakers at the Big Data & Analytics Innovation Summit in Sydney on September 14 & 15 is Harvey Lee, General Manager, Big Data Strategy at Telstra Corporation.

Given the recently announced move by Telstra to move into the mining sector, Harvey will undoubtedly be one of the most eagerly anticipated presentations at the event. The move, according to David Keenan, Head of Telstra Global Industries, is an attempt to use utilize Telstra's data driven approach and advanced technological understanding to improve production, "The decline in global commodity prices is largely driving a downturn in the resources sectr and, as a consequence, sharpening the industry's focus on reducing costs and maximising production."

Big data is going to have a huge impact on the mining and resources sector in coming years, similarly to how it has revolutionized oilfields. The opportunity to not only improve operating revenues, but to also increase safety (mining is still one of the most dangerous jobs in the world), optimize scheduling and decrease accidents and downtime. Through the adoption of data analytics and the IoT every element of the mining process can be monitored and optimized.

However, the aim of becoming more data-driven is something that is not only focused on the mining and resources industry, which is reflected in the lineup at, arguably, Australia's most high-level data summit. Companies speaking at the event span many industries, from the the tech giants of Facebook and Google, through to automotive innovators Toyota and even the Australian Bureau of Statistics discussing the challenges and opportunities that data is creating today.

The summit will be taking place on September 14 & 15 at the Intercontinental Sydney, with over 150 attendees and 25 big data leaders. For more information on the summit click here. For press passes, please contact Amy at [email protected] or call +1-415-429-8694
