Houston: Amazon Has Lift-Off on New Fulfillment Center

Amazon.com (News - Alert), Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) today announced plans to open its seventh Texas fulfillment center in Houston. Amazon currently employs more than 10,000 full-time hourly associates at its five operating Texas fulfillment centers and plans to create 1,000 more full-time positions at the new Houston site. Elsewhere in the Lone Star State, Amazon currently operates fulfillment centers in Coppell, Haslet, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Schertz, with an upcoming facility in San Marcos currently under construction.

"With Houston's legacy as a pioneer in innovation and exploration, we are proud to become a member of the community with the announcement of a new fulfillment center in the region," said Akash Chauhan, Amazon's vice president of North American operations. "We are excited to create more than 1,000 full-time jobs and to become a member of the business community."

Amazon employees at the 855,000-square-foot Houston fulfillment center will pick, pack and ship smaller customer items, such as books, electronics and toys.

"We are pleased but not surprised that a great company like Amazon continues to expand in Texas, bringing more than a thousand new jobs. Texas is committed to maintaining a strong business climate that allows companies to prosper, innovate and expand. I predict this will not be the last Amazon facility we will see here," said Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick.

"We welcome the continued expansion by Amazon in Harris County and the creation of 1,000 new quality jobs," said Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner R. Jac Cagle. "In addition to the positive economic impact it has made across the state, Amazon is a strong corporate partner that is deeply involved in local communities. We look forward to working together to grow our region's economy and provide jobs to area residents."

"We're proud to welcome Amazon to Harris County," said Harris County Judge Ed Emmett. "The relationship between Amazon, one of the nation's premier businesses, and Harris County - the third-largest county in the nation - will benefit both, and the economy as a whole."

"Amazon's new fulfillment center in Harris County is a substantial investment in our region," said Bob Harvey, President and CEO of the Greater Houston Partnership. "We applaud Amazon's commitment to providing jobs, training and ongoing education for more than 1,000 Houston-area residents," said Harvey. "As a global hub for distribution and logistics, Houston is well-positioned to support the company's continued growth."

Full-time employees at Amazon receive competitive hourly wages and a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare, 401(k) and company stock awards, starting on day one. Amazon also offers regular full-time employees maternity and parental leave benefits and access to innovative programs like Career Choice, where it will pre-pay up to 95 percent of tuition for courses related to in-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon. Since the program's launch, employees are pursuing degrees in game design and visual communications, nursing, IT programming, and radiology, to name a few.
