Technavio Announces Top Three Emerging Trends Impacting the Global Mask Inspection Equipment Market Through 2020

Technavio's latest report on the global mask inspection equipment market provides an analysis on the most important trends expected to impact the market outlook from 2016-2020. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

Navin Rajendra, a lead analyst from Technavio, specializing in research on semiconductor equipment says, "The global mask inspection equipment market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of over 11% during the forecast period. Mask inspection equipment is fab equipment that is used, before lithography, to inspect photomasks for defects during the production of semiconductor wafers. It is also used for R&D purposes. The increase in the application of semiconductor integrated circuits (ICs) in segments such as consumer electronics, automobiles, and industries is prompting IC vendors to raise their production scales."

The top three emerging trends driving the global mask inspection equipment market according to Technavio hardware and semiconductor research analysts are:

  • Evolution of IoT
  • Proliferation of wearable devices
  • Short replacement cycle of mobile devices

Evolution of IoT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of interconnected computing devices comprising mechanical and digital machines or objects that possess the unique ability to transfer data over the network without human-to-computer interaction. It is one of the fastest growing markets globally, with about 30 billion devices generating approximately 50 trillion GBs of data to be connected through the IoT by 2020.

The IoT allows devices to use sensors and actuators to collect and transmit data to a centralized location on a real-time basis. The adoption of the IoT is increasing in market sgments such as consumer electronics, automotive, and medical.

Sensors and MEMS are integral parts of IoT devices and are manufactured from 200-mm wafer. A total of one trillion sensors is estimated to be produced in 2020 to support the demand for IoT devices. This will require at least 1.7 million 200-mm wafers and therefore around three hundred 200-mm fabs. "The growing applications of the IoT will have a high impact on semiconductor device manufacturers as they will give rise to a number of fabs, triggering the demand for mask inspection equipment," says Navin.

Proliferation of wearable devices

Wearable devices such as smartwatches, smart fabrics, heart rate monitors, smart glasses, and fitness bands are used to track daily activities and monitor fitness levels and provide communication services. These sensor-integrated devices use mobile communication technology. Realizing the market potential from this sector, semiconductor device manufacturers such as Toshiba (News - Alert) have started developing specialized ICs to support the technology requirements. In early 2015, the company rolled out two new specialized ICs: Z1011MBG, with a gyroscope and a magnetometer, and TZ1031MBG, with a gyroscope.

The technology is set to gain significant momentum during the forecast period due to its adoption by the consumer segment. This will propel semiconductor device manufacturers to produce the semiconductor devices required for wearable devices.

Short replacement cycle of mobile devices

Technological advances and an increase in the global disposable income have brought about a change in the buying pattern of consumers. Electronic devices such as mobile and consumer devices are becoming obsolete fast (within one to one-and-half years) and are being replaced by higher versions or models with better technology launched by OEMs. This has reduced the product replacement cycle for such devices. According to industry experts, 70% of Apple iPhone (News - Alert) revenue is contributed by recurring sales, while the remaining 30% by new users. The replacement sales will rise to 80% in the future. This will result in high demand for semiconductor ICs and increased production capacities of foundries, indirectly triggering the need for mask inspection equipment.
