Hortonworks Advances Enterprise Innovations for Connected Data Platforms

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and SAN JOSE, Calif., June 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- (Hadoop Summit) -- Hortonworks, Inc. ® (NASDAQ: HDP), a leading innovator of open and connected data platforms, today announced new innovations to the 100% open source Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP®), which allows enterprises to accumulate, analyze and act on data. Hortonworks is executing on its new distribution strategy to deliver rapid innovations from the Apache™ Hadoop® community to its customers with this latest Extended Services release. The following advancements to the platform were highlighted at Hadoop Summit, June 28th-30th in San Jose:

Integration of Comprehensive Security and Trusted Governance

HDP 2.5 delivers enterprise-ready features including the unique integration of industry-leading comprehensive security and trusted data governance to define and implement dynamic classification-based security policies. Enterprises can use Apache Atlas to classify and assign metadata tags, which are then enforced through Apache Ranger to enable various access policies. In addition, Atlas now provides cross-component lineage. The Atlas community was created by Hortonworks and a group of its customers and partners.

Enterprise Spark at Scale

Analysts and data scientists can now use Apache Zeppelin, a web-based notebook, for interactive data analytics and the creation of beautiful data-driven, interactive and collaborative documents with SQL, Scala, Python and more. HDP 2.5 also includes a technical preview of the latest version of Apache Spark from the community, which makes Spark dramatically easier, faster and smarter.

Streamlined Operations

With the latest Apache Ambari, enterprises can plan, install and securely configure HDP and easily provide ongoing maintenance and management. An integrated log search and access capability enables operators to search, browse and filter their cluster operational logs for easier management. Additionally, a new flexible role-based access control model enables the administrator to provide different users with a controlled setof functional access to the cluster.

Streamlined backup and restore capabilities have been added to Apache HBase allowing operators to perform incremental backups. In addition, multi-tenancy enables soft partitioning of data and nodes on the cluster and allocates specific data storage and data processing resources to specific internal or external tenants like departments within an enterprise.

Developer Productivity

For developers leveraging Apache Phoenix with HBase, the addition of the Apache Phoenix Query Server now allows greater access and choice of development languages to access data stored within HBase. In addition, Apache Storm allows for large scale deployments with advanced capabilities to address real-time stream processing such as native heartbeat support and automatic back pressure. Further developer productivity advancements include new connectors for search and NoSQL databases. Storm also has streamlined operations for resource aware scheduling through Ambari views.
