"The possibilities and applications of IoT help transfer an individual's personal preferences to electronic devices. It makes home appliances more responsive to external conditions. For instance, as soon as the user steps in the facility or house, the system automates the appliances based on user activities. For instance, A/C can be adjusted to the desired room temperature with the help of integration with 3G and 4G enabled devices," said Sunil Kumar Singh, one of Technavio's lead industry analysts for computing devices.

Some of the other driving forces behind the growth of the global 3G 4G devices market are as follows:

  • Shutdown of 2G connectivity
  • Emerging aerospace and defense sector
  • Demand from telecom sector fostering demand

Shutdown of 2G connectivity

High speed 3G/4G internet services are becoming readily available worldwide. On average, the data speed of a 4G connection is 10 times more than 3G data speed. High speed internet connectivity leads to faster web browsing, faster streaming of videos, and better performance of GPS.

Hence, many countries are opting for 3G/4G connectivity, resulting in the shutdown of 2G mobile networks by the end of 2016 with that bandwidth allocated to 3/4G mobile networks. Telstra (News - Alert), Australia's largest telecommunications and media company, will shut down 2G mobile networks in Australia by the end of 2016; SingTel and Star Hub will cease their 2G services in Singapore on April 1, 2017. AT&T (News - Alert), a US-based telecommunication service provider, announced that it will shut down its 2G services by January 1, 2017. Shutting down of 2G services will force 2G users to shift to 3G or 4G services, thereby boosting the sales of devices that are capable of supporting 3G or 4G networks.

Increasing adoption of bring-your-own-device (BYOD) and bring-your-own-access (BYOA) policies

Constantly changing business scenarios prompts organizations to develop a better mobile workforce to gain competitive advantage. Constant changes in work locations, time zone barriers, and the need to access official and confidential data via an employee's personal device are resulting in the adoption of BYOD and BYOA policies. BYOA provides flexibility to employees to choose the software they are comfortable with, thereby reducing software purchases and licensing costs. BYOD also helps eliminate hardware device costs.

Employees are increasingly implementing these policies, as it enables them to use one devices for both personal and professional use. BYOD includes smartphones, laptops, and tablets. In 2015, smartphones held a revenue share of 58.56% in the global BYOD market. This is because mobile developers are developing mobile apps similar to Microsoft (News - Alert) Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word.

Growing number of internet users

Internet penetration increased by seven-fold from 6.5% to 43% of the global population between 2000 and 2015. The number of households with internet access increased from 18% in 2005 to 46% in 2015. This is due to the growing need for the internet for social networking and educational purposes, among others.

3G mobile-broadband coverage is extending rapidly. Globally, mobile broadband penetration was 47% in 2015. It increased 12-fold since 2007. The global population covered by 3G mobile broadband increased from 45% in 2011 to 69% in 2015.

3G mobile broadband is expanding into rural areas as well. ITU estimated that 29% of the 3.4 billion people worldwide living in rural areas used 3G mobile broadband by the end of 2015. Among the 4 billion people living in urban areas, 89% had access to 3G mobile broadband in 2015.
