The report categorizes the global metal oxide TFT backplanes market into five major segments based on application. They are:

  • Smartphones
  • TVs
  • Tablets
  • Laptops/Notebooks
  • Desktop PCs

Smartphones

The smartphones segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 13% by 2020. Display manufacturers opt for metal oxide technology in smartphones so as to enable benefits such as low power consumption and high resolution displays. "Increasing demand for high resolution displays has compelled manufacturers to incorporate either low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) or metal oxide backplane technology in smartphones. However, LTPS is more expensive than metal oxide technology. Hence, display manufacturers are increasingly adopting metal oxide over LTPS," says Sunil Kumar Singh, a lead analyst at Technavio for displays research.

TVs

The unit shipment of metal oxide TFT backplane for TVs is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 45% during the forecast period. This is due to the low manufacturing cost of metal oxide TFT backplane over LTPS.

In 2015, LTPS technology was incorporated in approximately 22% of the total TVs shipped worldwide, owing to the growing demand for high resolution smart TVs, which require a backplane technology that has high mobility.

Though LTPS technology has higher mobility than its competing technologies, it involves high manufacturing cot because of higher number of manufacturing steps. Therefore, manufacturers are opting for metal oxide technology which can be easily adopted by existing TFT fabs. This technology is best suited for large area displays including LCDs and OLEDs, as the mobility of metal oxide TFT backplane is sufficient to provide refresh rates of UHD displays.

Tablets

Tablets accounted for approximately 10% of the market share in 2015 and are not expected to register promising growth during the forecast period. This is due to the limited functionality of tablets compared to notebooks and PCs. Though tablets have functionalities similar to smartphones, most of them do not have calling facilities. Thus, tablets are replaced by smartphones, leading to slow growth in the global tablet market. Mobile device manufacturers usually prefer to introduce innovative technologies in smartphones as opposed to tablets.

Laptops/notebooks

Laptops and notebooks cater to the same target customers. The difference between the two is primarily the screen size. The laptops are larger in size than notebooks and have higher processing power than notebooks.

In 2015, this segment accounted for approximately 7% of the market share and is expected to grow at a CAGR of close to 10%. The market for these devices is primarily driven by the introduction of new operating systems and enhanced functionality for instance, the launch of Windows 10 generated renewed interest among users.

Another major factor hindering the growth of this segment is the introduction of 2-in-1 convertible PCs. Slow growth in the notebook and tablet markets prompted manufacturers to introduce 2-in-1 convertible PCs.

Desktop PCs

Majority of desktop monitors use LCD technology. LCDs consume less power, less space, and are lighter as compared to CRT displays. Although, the desktop monitors lost some of their market share to the growing popularity of mobile computing devices such as tablets, smartphones, and laptops, they are still one of the dominant computing devices in enterprises. LCD monitors are mainly used by enterprises for office use and by consumers for video and audio entertainment use.

Desktop PCs are expected to witness an impressive CAGR of over 46% during the forecast period, as manufacturers are deploying cost-effective backplane technology to reduce the manufacturing cost. "This will not only help them to stay profitable in the market but will also generate renewed interest among the users by providing high resolution and rich color quality PCs," says Sunil.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio's research analysts in this report are:

  • AU Optronics
  • BOE Technology Group
  • LG Display
  • Samsung Display
  • Sharp (News - Alert)
