Spotfund, New Mobile App, Lets You Donate Only $1, $2 Or $3 To Causes And Current Events

NEW YORK, June 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Spotfund, a mobile micro-donation platform, today launched its iOS app. Spotfund allows users to fund causes and current events with only $1, $2 or $3.

Spotfund is a mobile micro-donation platform that lets you fund causes and current events with only $1, $2 or $3.

With Spotfund, you can easily discover and donate to the stories the world is talking about. You can also create a story of your own to raise funds for a cause that matters to you. With donations capped at $3, the platform is designed for everyone looking to make a difference. And by closely integrating with major social networks, Spotfund helps turn conversations into results.

"Making an impact isn't about the size of your wallet, it's about the power of your social network," says Spotfund CEO and co-founder Sanford Kunkel. "Through micro-donations, we're opening the idea of philanthropy to people from all walks of life. If you share even a $1 donation to Facebook, you can potentially inspire a critical mass that will lead to real change."

How Spotfund works

Donating is simple: Just drop a token onto a story to contribute $1, $2 or $3. Once you've made a donation, share it with your social network through platforms like Facebook and Twitter, encouraging your friends to give – and helping your cause go viral.

Make your mark with the spottag

Each story in Spotfund has a unique spottag, a title denoted by an asterisk – such as *FlintWaterCrisis – that you can share online or in the physical world as a shortcut to your story. Sharing a spottag is the easiest way to promote your cause and increase your Impact score.

Your Impact score tracks the size of your civic footprint. It increases with each dollar you donate – and with ach dollar raised by the stories you've created and shared. If you donate $1 to a cause and share it with a friend who donates $3, you've earned a total of 4 Impact points.

Personal storytelling meets the social good

Stories in Spotfund are presented in a social feed and consist of images, video and text that users upload directly through the app.

Each story in Spotfund raises funds for a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, giving you confidence that your money will go towards a greater good. At launch, Spotfund allows users to raise funds for more than 350 handpicked nonprofits, selected on the basis of their area of focus and quality ratings.

Spotfund is partnering with Honeycomb, a social impact software company, to power its nonprofit database and help Spotfund users quantify the impact of donations made through the platform.

Donations made through Spotfund are tax deductible. At the end of your monthly billing cycle, Spotfund provides an itemized receipt of all donations you've made that month.

"Spotfund is changing the perception of what it means to be civic minded," explains Michael Marian, COO and co-founder of Spotfund. "By giving our users a platform to tell stories that raise funds for causes, we're helping people draw personal connections to the events shaping their world, whether in their own backyard or across the Pacific."

Partnerships with nonprofits and brands

Spotfund is working closely with a select group of nonprofits and brands to help them raise funds and create awareness for their causes. At launch, Spotfund's list of partners includes:

  • ALS.net: Known for its success with the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, ALS.net is a global network of people with ALS, their care providers, family and friends, fundraising events, awareness campaigns and foundations committed to funding innovative, patient-centered research leading to the development of effective treatments and eventually a cure for ALS. ALS.net directly supports the ALS Therapy Development Institute, the world's first and largest nonprofit biotech focused 100 percent on ALS research.
  • MissionBlue: An initiative of the Sylvia Earle Alliance, Mission Blue ignites public support for the protection of Hope Spots—special places that are vital to the health of the ocean, the blue heart of our planet. Dr. Earle, a famous oceanographer and explorer, was the subject of the award-winning 2014 Netflix documentary Mission Blue.
  • The Kokua Hawai?i Foundation: Founded in 2003 by Jack and Kim Johnson, the Kokua Hawai?i Foundation supports environmental education in the schools and communities of Hawai?i.
