The 19th edition of The GRIT Report uses data collected in the first and second quarters of 2016. It relies on 2,144 completed interviews of mostly senior level research professionals from 70 countries to provide a meaningful snapshot of the research industry.

GRIT Report Key Findings:

  • Mobile Surveys and Online Communities are now mainstream, and well ahead of all other "new" research approaches. Some 74% of respondents are using mobile surveys in 2016, while 61% use online communities. These two approaches also show the largest growth in adoption (10%), underscoring the trend towards agile research. Meanwhile, the adoption scores for Social Media Analytics (48%), Virtal Reality (14%) and Biometric Response (11%) have been flat over the last four GRIT editions.
  • Automation is already transforming much of the industry, and it's in wide use at almost identical levels among clients and suppliers. Analytics and reporting are currently being automated by a majority of respondents, and many other aspects of research are being disrupted now as well.
    • Some 72% of research suppliers and 66% of buyers say the automation of charting and infographics is in use or under consideration.
    • Analysis of text data stands at 67% for suppliers and 61% for buyers.
    • The analysis of survey data stands at 66% for suppliers and 60% for buyers.
    • And the analysis of social media is now 62% for suppliers and 70% for buyers.
  • More clients and suppliers agree that sample quality is getting worse, but there is little alignment on what to do about it. Some 38% of buyers and suppliers said they expect sample quality to continue to get worse. Only 23% of buyers and 28% of suppliers said it will get better.

According to Lukas Pospichal, managing director of GreenBook, "Researchers have come to rely on our GRIT data to make important decisions. So in keeping with our history of transparency and collaboration, we are making this data available to everyone for further exploration via Dapresy."

"We're pleased to continue our partnership with GreenBook in helping to clearly communicate the results of its findings through our dynamic dashboard system," said Rudy Nadilo, president of Dapresy North America. "We hope the research industry garners valuable insights from it."
