Boies, Schiller & Flexner Hires Prominent Litigator Sean O'Shea

Boies, Schiller & Flexner announced the addition of prominent litigator Sean O'Shea to further expand the firm's white collar defense and complex business litigation practices. O'Shea is the former Chief of the Business Securities Fraud Section of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York and comes from the successful boutique litigation firm he founded, O'Shea Partners LLP. He joins as a partner.

Civil litigator Michael Petrella also is joining Boies, Schiller & Flexner as a partner from O'Shea Partners. Brian Alexander and Amanda Devereux are joining from O'Shea Partners as associates.

"We have long admired Sean's work handling some of the nation's most significant and complex cases, and we are particularly impressed by his exceptional trial skills, which are matched by few lawyers in the country," said Chairman David Boies. "We are excited to welcome Sean and his team to the firm."

Managing Partner Jonathan Schiller said, "Sean will provide our clients with the experienced leadership to manage their most critical legal issues. His arrival continues the rapid expansion of our white collar defense group while increasing our capabilities in the full range of complex business disputes."

O'Shea and his team join many other lawyers who have come to Boies, Schiller & Flexner from significant positions in government, including 18 other former federal prosecutors, former officials at the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, the New York Attorney General's Office, the White House and Congress. Most recently, four prosecutors joined the firm from the Southern District of New York in 2015 to launch a Global Investigations and White Collar Defense goup.

"Joining Boies, Schiller & Flexner gives me the opportunity to access the resources of a first-tier trial firm that is involved in the nation's most significant legal disputes," O'Shea said. "An additional attraction is that, unlike most other top litigation firms, Boies, Schiller & Flexner also does plaintiff-side work. The opportunity to join a firm of aggressive trial lawyers, while continuing to work on both sides of the courtroom, is a huge lure for me."

O'Shea has represented clients ranging from large corporations, to prominent private equity and hedge funds, to senior executives at major corporations. He has tried more than 85 cases to verdict, including federal and state jury and bench trials, arbitrations, and administrative proceedings. His cases range from sophisticated business fraud matters in the criminal context to representing corporations and individuals seeking monetary damages in securities fraud and Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act cases in the commercial context.

During his decade-long tenure as a federal prosecutor, he handled many high-profile cases and received numerous awards and commendations from the Department of Justice, the F.B.I. and other law enforcement agencies for his work in significant white collar crime matters. He has been a featured speaker before federal law enforcement groups including the F.B.I. and U.S. Postal Inspection Service. He served as an instructor in trial tactics and courtroom procedures classes at the F.B.I. Academy at Quantico, Virginia. O'Shea earned his B.A. at the University of Illinois and his J.D. at Northwestern University School of Law.

Petrella specializes in complex commercial litigation and has successfully litigated and tried numerous business disputes at the trial and appellate levels in both state and federal court. His experience includes litigating matters involving securities fraud, intellectual property, antitrust, civil RICO, and the full range of business torts. He has also handled internal shareholder disputes and leveraged buyout suits. Petrella earned his B.A. from Franklin and Marshall College and his J.D from Case Western Reserve University School of Law.
