PIAA, the leading international association representing the medical and healthcare professional liability (MPL/HPL) insurance community, today announced that Richard E. Anderson, MD, FACP, Chairman and CEO, The Doctors Company, was selected by the Association's Board of Directors to serve as its Chair. The appointment occurred on Friday, May 13, during the 2016 PIAA Medical Liability Conference in Washington, D.C.

"I'm happy to be passing the reins over to Richard," said outgoing Chair Gloria H. Everett, President and CEO, The Mutual RRG. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this position, and the Association will be in good hands under his watch. I look forward to PIAA's sustained progress, under Richard's leadership, in promoting, protecting, educating, and connecting all of the organizations and people in the medical and healthcare professional liability community that support the quality delivery of healthcare."

Dr. Anderson has led The Doctors Company, the nation's largest physician-owned MPL insurer, for more than 20 years. He was a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and is past chairman of the Department of Medicine at Scripps Memorial Hospital, where he served as senior oncologist for 18 years. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude from Yale College.

"The shifting healthcare environment has created significant challenges for both the individuals and institutions that deliver patient care," said Dr. Anderson. "As the new PIAA Chair, I look forward to guiding the Association as it works in support of those entities that insure physicians, advanced healthcare professionals, and hospitals and medical facilities around the worl. PIAA has a wealth of exceptional tools and programs in place to advance patient safety, including its ability to analyze thousands of closed MPL/HPL claims through the PIAA Data Sharing Project."

Dr. Anderson noted that PIAA and its diverse membership work collaboratively in support of those who deliver healthcare. "PIAA has established itself as a leader in the patient safety arena, and I am very excited about my upcoming work with my fellow Board members, as well as all of the members of the Association, to advance the cause of quality care," he said. "PIAA and risk management are synonymous-and the contributions the Association and its members make in this area truly do make a difference."

PIAA President and CEO Brian K. Atchinson said, "Dr. Anderson's contributions to the establishment of a stable medical liability market and the advancement of quality patient care are substantial. His in-depth knowledge of both insurance and clinical medicine, on a national and as well as an international basis, will be instrumental in helping PIAA continue to build on its strong foundation of success."

"In addition, I would like to recognize outgoing Chair Gloria Everett for her outstanding leadership and dedication," Atchinson continued. "Gloria's work as Chair during the past two years has been exemplary, and we are confident that the Association will benefit from her continued efforts as a member of the Board."
