Treehouse Introduces Techdegree

Treehouse, the online coding school, is today launching Techdegree, an intensive, 6-12 month guided-learning program designed to prepare students for entry-level developer jobs at companies across the country.

According to data gathered by Code.org from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2015 there were over 500,000 unfilled computer science jobs across the United States. The roles are within a wide range of companies and sectors, not just at the social media or search engine giants in Silicon Valley. Treehouse hopes the Techdegree will act as a 'passport' to these jobs across the country with a wider and more diverse range of people getting access to a well-paid job in tech.

Established in 2011, the company is recognized and valued by employers such as Buzzfeed, Home Depot, Kaplan, Mailchimp and NASA who have used Treehouse products to give their employees new tech skills.

"Our mission is to help people change their lives by getting the certification they need to get a great job in the tech industry," said Ryan Carson, Treehouse co-founder and CEO. "These are not jobs in Silicon Valley alone - they are jobs across America, in every sector of the economy. Our goal is to help fill these vacancies with well-qualified and highly motivated people from a wide variety of backgrounds."

he Techdegree program is designed for those who are looking to make a career out of technology - whether a student is looking to enter the workforce for the first time or make an overall career switch. While many can see themselves working in tech, the time commitment and exorbitant cost of 2 and 4 year degrees can be a deterrent. Alternatively, what is offered on free learning sites is not always taught properly, does not reflect the most up-to-date skills required, and is not organized in a way that is accessible to students. Treehouse's goal is to solve this by delivering the best online education product on the market at a fraction of the cost of a traditional degree.

"Today's workforce has been underserved by conventional education," said Chamath Palihapitiya, CEO and founder at Social Capital. "The existing system is meeting the needs of few but failing most, and more dynamic approaches like Treehouse's Techdegree program are essential for helping a broader population fulfill its potential. Tech jobs are no longer relegated to the tech industry, and empowering communities outside of Silicon Valley to affordably acquire the expertise to fill them is a huge and important opportunity."

Building on the company's basic subscription product (starting at $25 per month), the Techdegree program includes Treehouse's acclaimed features, including 100% original content, full-time teachers who are experts in their subject and high-quality videos and interactive tools. In addition, Techdegree courses will include 12 real world coding projects that are reviewed and graded by Treehouse Staff, dedicated Slack channels for students to meet each other and get their questions answered, a final proctored exam, and one-on-one video mentorship for students.

Techdegrees will be offered in six key topics:

  • Android (News - Alert)
  • Front End Web Development
  • Full Stack JavaScript
  • iOS
  • Java
  • Python

Each course has been designed by educational experts and employers to ensure that Treehouse students have the very latest skills and qualifications needed to get the best jobs in tech. A Techdegree program takes about 6-12 months on average to complete and will cost from $399 per month. For more information on Techdegree visit: www.teamtreehouse.com/techdegree.
