ONUG Announces First Collaborative Effort to Drive Industry-wide Transition to Open Software-Defined Infrastructure

TheĀ Open Networking User Group (ONUG) today announced the launch of a set of new industry initiatives focused on open IT frameworks. These initiatives mark a major milestone for ONUG in its commitment to transition the industry to a true open software-defined infrastructure. The announcement highlights ONUG's first collaborative effort to facilitate the development of standards and open source code while also creating a governing body to oversee their development.

Based upon ONUG Working Group member requirements, the following four new initiatives are a realization of missing open technologies, which are necessary for an open software-defined infrastructure market to develop at scale:

  • Open SD-WAN Exchange (OSE)
  • Open Interoperable Control Plane (OICP)
  • Open Traffic Management Format (OTMF)

"The new open industry initiatives will promote collaboration amongst vendors, academics, standards and open source organizations, and enterprise IT business leaders that is vital in bringing the ONUG Community closer to the open software-defined infrastructure they require," said Nick Lippis, Co-Chairman and Co-Founder of ONUG. "I would like to commend these trailblazing participants for the role they are playing in steering this movement, which will ultimately work to benefit both IT buyers and sellers."

The initial list of companies committed to exploring the development of open IT framework industry initiatives includes: Apstra, Cisco, Citrix, CloudGenix, FatPipe, Glue Networks, NetScout, NTT Innovation Institute, Inc., Nuage Networks, Silver Peak, VeloCloud, Veriflow, Verizon (News - Alert), Versa Networks, and Viptela.

Supporting vendors will participate in a series of four ONUG Workshops in New York City over the summer and fall of 2016. Academics, IT executives, and vendors will attend and collaborate. ONUG will provide an industry platform for the development of the initiatives that includes guidance, public/private plugfests, hackathons, and demonstrations at ONUG Conferences. ONUG will host update sessions at ONUG Fall 2016.
