Medical World Americas Announces 2 World-Renowned Medical Inventors as Headliners: Joe Kiani & Dean Kamen Speaking About Innovation Through Disruption and Discovery

Medical World Americas (MWA) welcomes leaders from across life sciences to the third annual Medical World Americas Conference & Expo. The event encourages attendees to engage in discussions on the latest innovations that impact the health care industry through TED-style sessions and co-located events. Medical World Americas will be held on May 18-20. 2016 at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Produced in collaboration with the Texas Medical Center (TMC (News - Alert)), the conference offers a cutting-edge program specifically designed for both clinical and administrative health care professionals. Focused on the theme, "Innovate: Transforming Health through Disruption and Discovery," the 2016 program will spotlight the latest research, strategies, policies, technologies and procedures advancing healthcare. Conference topics will also address ethics and policy implications of these transformative innovations.

Headlining the event on Wednesday is Joe Kiani, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Masimo & Cercacor. Mr. Kiani is also the Founder of the non-profit Patient Safety Movement Foundation. As a young engineer in his twenties, he became convinced that he could solve the high rate of false alarms when noninvasively monitoring a patient's oxygen level, so he started working on a solution from his garage. Masimo was born and Kiani became the co-inventor of the "measure-through-motion and low perfusion" pulse oximetry that virtually eliminated false alarms (70-95% to 5%) and increased pulse oximetry's ability to detect life-threatening events. Today, his company has over 600 patents and its noninvasive innovations monitor over 100 million patients a year. Mr. Kiani will have a conversation about innovation with Robert C. Robbins, CEO of the Texas Medical Center. Rounding out the opening plenary session will be Dr. Arthur "Tim" Garson, Director of the TMC Health Policy Institute, who will unveil the results from the second annual Texas Medical Center Consumer Health Report, a nationwide survey initiated by the TMC Health Policy Institute to reveal attitudes and behaviors of the health care industry, assessing their attitudes and behaviors towards health insurance. Umair A. Shah, M.D., MPH, executive director of the Harris County Public Health and Environmental Sciences, will identify the key strategies in managing innovations for on-demand medicine, population health and care management, and the clinical technologies as it relates to the combatting the Zika virus. Dr. Shah will also explain the current issues related to health policy and the overall impact on patients and healthcare.

Thursday's hadliners are inventor Dean Kamen, DEKA and US FIRST founder and Lynda Chin, M.D., Chief Innovation Officer for Health Affairs at the University of Texas System. They will share the stage to talk about disruptive technologies and discoveries in medicine. Dean's passion for technology and its practical uses has driven his pursuit to initiate global change and he'll talk about some of his medical innovations from among his 440 patents. His recent projects include portable energy and water purification for the developing world and the prosthetic arm for maimed soldiers. Dr. Chin has developed a programmatic initiative to create a public-private ecosystem of technology, service, retail and healthcare industries to tackle the challenge of diabetes care and management in South Texas.

As a collaborative partner, TMC will host several special events throughout the conference that showcase MWA's initiative to inspire new solutions, applications and opportunities in the health care industry:

• The TMC Texas Pitch Event invites start-up companies and incubator programs to compete for cash prizes as they present their medical technologies and health care solutions to an audience of key health system stakeholders and health care professionals.
• The TMC Student Poster Session offers current students of TMC institutions the opportunity to submit original abstract posters relating to the conference theme, "Innovate: Transforming Health Through Disruption and Discovery."
• The TMC Red, White and You career event invites veterans to meet with recruiters from many different institutions. In addition, MWA will host non-military personal seeking jobs.
