The report categorizes the global nano PLC market into four end-user industries. They are:

  • Home and building automation
  • Food and beverage
  • Water and wastewater
  • Others (small automation tasks in industrial settings)

Global nano PLC market by home and building automation industry

Nano PLCs are used for lighting controls, door and gate controls, HVAC systems, shutter, sunblind and awning controls, alarm and safety systems, and parking lot monitoring. Rising population has led to wide diversification and growth of the real estate and construction sector worldwide. Various apartment units are being built based on the mandatory green building and energy conservation policies of the area, which necessitate the adoption of home automation systems and solutions. The concept of smart homes via home automation is now accessible even in medium-sized apartments.

According to Bharath Kanniappan, one of Technavio's lead analyst for automation research, "Factors such as the growth in the real estate sector, increase in per capita purchasing power of APAC, awareness of home automation among consumers, availability of high-end technologies, and rising demand for luxurious lifestyles represent the positive factors tht will influence the development of the home automation market, leading to the wider adoption of nano PLCs."

Global nano PLC market by food and beverage industry

Nano PLCs are used in conveyor automation and to control automatic food dispensing machines and packaging equipment in the F&B industry. In 2015, China was the world's largest grocery market, valued at more than USD 1.23 trillion. The demand for food is high in the country due to rising population. High demand for food has resulted in factories increasing their production, which has boosted the demand for automation in their plant.

"Rise in household expenditure, especially on food and drink in Europe, is likely to push the market to find new investment opportunities to fulfill demand. In 2015, Nestle invested about USD 69 million in its factory in Spain to implement factory automation, which includes adoption of nano PLCs. In 2015, the company announced another investment of USD 108 million to build a new factory in Girona, Spain," says Bharath.

Global nano PLC market by water and wastewater industry

Nano PLCs are used in the water and wastewater industry to control oxygen level in aeration tanks, volume and density of mud, and measure nitrate and phosphate levels. They also acquire and exchange information with the central grid. The infrastructure in the water industry especially in APAC is aging. Thus, the equipment needs to be modernized or upgraded to meet the growing need. The population growth in APAC is high compared to any other region worldwide. Therefore, the demand for potable water is also high. The urbanization rate worldwide is expected to increase by more than 50% between 2010 and 2022. This will push the need for a proper sewage disposal and water-treatment plants in the region.

The water industry in the US is facing a complete transformation. Earlier, nearly 90% of the water utilities serving consumers were purely government-owned. At present, through the PPP model, the government is attracting private industries into the market. This new business model is encouraging joint ventures between startups in the water industry. These initiatives will bring in new investments in the future, creating demand for nano PLCs.
