"Inova Fairfax Medical Campus has been recognized for excellence in healthcare and leadership in providing innovative therapies and technology to their patients," said Cameron Piron, President of Synaptive Medical. "Institutions like Inova are focused on defining the future today, without their leadership we can't define what innovation really means. Hospitals who are leading the charge to redefine healthcare help us to get the best technology available today to those who need it most," adds Piron.

"The Synaptive BrightMatter Solution is a perfect complement to our global mission in the Inova Neuroscience Institute - steadfast dedication to providing the most up-to-date and revolutionary care for patients with neurological disease," said James Ecklund, MD, Chief of Neurosurgery and Chairman of the Inova Neuroscience and Spine Institute in the Inova Health Care System. "This growing clinical and research collaboration is an ideal reflection of our central goals and will contribute to our continued innovation across the spectrum of neurosurgery."

The Synaptive BrightMatter systems represent a unique integration of technology addressing the core challenges of neurosurgery: strategic planning, information-rich surgical navigation and intraoperative tissue visualization using advanced optics and robotic manipulation. Synaptive's unrivaled visualization tools allow surgeons to see and evaluate critical brain pathways to plan the best surgical approach. Lesions deep within the brain may now be accessible, where previously they were inoperable. BrightMatter Plan generates a highly detailed 3D representation of a patient's unique fiber tracts for their entire brain in a matter of minutes. Conventional methods are laborious, time-consuming, and produce limited information compared to BrightMatter Plan.

In the operating room, surgeons can see the details of their surgical plan, a patient's unique fiber tracts in real time, and a highly detailed image of the surgical field with the robotic camera system, which can follow surgeons to positions inaccessible to a microscope. In complementary fashion, BrightMatter Guide allows a surgeon to track their tools in relation to critical structures in the brain which could impact one's ability to speak, move or see.

Allen Waziri, MD, Neurosurgeon and Director of the Inova Neuro-Oncology Program, said, "Brain tumor surgeons are very familiar with historical advances that led to improved outcomes for patients undergoing neurosurgery - the intraoperative microscope, magnetic resonance imaging, image guidance. Each of these technologies contributed independently to our ability to bring patients through otherwise potentially deadly procedures with limited risk and optimal outcomes. The BrightMatter System is a quantum leap forward in assimilating these technologies and will become a standard of comparison for future intraoperative technical development."

Synaptive Medical and the Inova Neuroscience Institute have developed a unique research collaboration to focus on optimizing their existing systems to develop future innovation and efficiencies. Cameron Piron said, "Partnerships with our customers is critical to the future of the medical industry. Knowing where the gaps are helps us to define the unmet needs of the surgical community and react quickly to develop the solution."

About Synaptive Medical | Synaptive Medical, a Toronto based company has a talented team of scientists and engineers specifically committed to the development of neurosurgical technologies and therapies. The result is their BrightMatterTM Neurosurgical Solutions that provide advanced tools and information to allow surgeons to focus on patient outcomes. From advanced visualization and guidance to their first hands-free surgical scope, Synaptive medical is collaborating with surgeons, hospitals and industry partners to define a new standard of care for neurosurgical intervention.
