Judge Catherine D. Perry to Receive the 2016 American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the Eighth Circuit


Judge Catherine D. Perry has been selected to receive the prestigious 2016 American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the Eighth Circuit. The award will be presented in early May at the Eighth Circuit Judicial Conference in Arkansas by Chief Judge William Jay Riley.

Perry is a district judge for the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Missouri, on whose bench she has served since 1994 and served as chief judge 2009-2015. Prior to her appointment by President Bill Clinton, she was a magistrate judge on the same court for four years. Before joining the federal bench, Perry was in private practice with the St. Louis firm of Armstrong, Teasdale.

Perry was one of the organizers of the Theodore McMillian American Inn of Court in St. Louis, Missouri. She serves as a Master of that Inn and was its first president. She was instrumental in establishing the Judicial Learning Center at the Thomas F. Eagleton Federal Courthouse in St. Louis. The Judicial Learning Center is an interactive learning space designed to teach students and others about the role of the Judicial Branch of govrnment. Perry often meets with and speaks to the groups when they visit the courthouse.



Perry currently serves on the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, a seven-judge panel appointed by the Chief Justice under 28 U.S.C. ยง 1407. She also serves on the Eighth Circuit Judicial Council. She previously served for seven years on the U.S. Judicial Conference Committee on Automation and Technology, and has frequently written and lectured on the effective use of technology in the courtroom.

Perry graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor's degree in urban studies, and earned her JD from Washington University in St. Louis School of Law. She served as managing editor of the law quarterly and was elected to the Order of the Coif.
