Radware's Alteon® NG VA Achieves 20 Gbps Performance on OpenStack with 6WIND Virtual Accelerator™

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- 6WIND, a high performance networking software company, and Radware (RDWR), a leading provider of cyber security and application delivery solutions ensuring optimal service levels for applications in virtual, cloud and software defined data centers, today announced that Radware's Application Delivery Controller (ADC), the Alteon® NG VA, can perform at 20 Gbps using the 6WIND Virtual Accelerator™.  The news follows Speed Certification tests* with 6WIND and proves that it is possible to achieve, and sustain virtualized performance above and beyond industry expectations for Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) using an OpenStack environment.

6WIND, NFV Innovation of the Year Award Winner

Radware's certification enables network operators to confidently exploit the advantages of virtual infrastructures and OpenStack environments. While OpenStack has advantages for network optimization, the downside has always been that speeds slow dramatically. Now combining Alteon® NG VA and 6WIND Virtual Accelerator™ technologies operators can eliminate the use of PCI passthrough/SR-IOV and cost effectively move to an NFV architecture without compromising the performance or impacting the virtualization environment that their customers expect.

Frank Yue, Director, Solution Marketing, Application Delivery for Radware, explained why it's so important: "Mobile operators are constantly looking for ways to make the network more agile and flexible. As quad-play services and the Internet of Things takes off, the demand on the network will accelerate exponentially. While it's good news for the consumer that they will be able to take advantage of connected living and watch their favorite shows on the move, the operator will be in a constant cycle of balancing the load and meeting performance expectations."

"But it's possible to relieve tis pressure by exploiting technologies differently to alleviate network bottlenecks. As we've now proven using the 6WIND Virtual Accelerator, it's wholly conceivable to run an NFV architecture in an OpenStack environment that's capable of managing a high load without a degradation in service," concludes Yue.

It is challenging to run OpenStack environments that support the high network performance requirements of large carrier and enterprise networks.  The 6WIND Virtual Accelerator accelerates virtual networking infrastructure within standard KVM hypervisor environments.  This allows Virtual Network Functions (VNF) and Virtual Machines (VM) such as Radware's Alteon NG ADC, to benefit from standard virtual networking infrastructure without any additional hardware. Tests have shown the 6WIND Virtual Accelerator improves Alteon NG performance to 20 Gbps.

"High performance virtual Application Delivery Controllers are critical to realize the promise of NFV," said Eric Carmès, CEO and Founder of 6WIND. "6WIND Speed Certification for Radware's Alteon vADC ensures Network Operators can leverage virtual infrastructure to cost-effectively transition to NFV with the right level of performance."

*About the Tests

The tests involved running Radware's Alteon NG VA within a VM on a standard OpenStack KVM hypervisor leveraging 6WIND Virtual Accelerator. Testing confirmed Virtual Accelerator increased performance to 20 Gbps without changing the physical or virtual environment.
