Princeton University Contributes iSDX Code to Open Networking Foundation's OpenSourceSDN.org

The Open Networking Foundation (ONF), a non-profit organization dedicated to accelerating the adoption of open Software-Defined Networking (SDN), today announced that Princeton University has contributed the code from its open source Internet Exchange project to the OpenSourceSDN.org code repository in order to be built upon by the software development community. Initially announced during the Open Networking Summit by Arpit Gupta, graduate student at Princeton and project team leader, the donation of iSDX (Industrial-Scale Software Defined Internet Exchange Point) marks OpenSourceSDN.org's 30th open source SDN project.

The iSDX project, which has been in development and testing at Princeton University for the past two years, allows the use of SDN controllers to manage high-volume traffic and the application of flow-based policy beyond what conventional routing can offer. iSDX gives Internet Exchange service providers the ability to offer metered Quality of Service (QoS) to customers.

"We aim to reach a broader set of open source SDN developers through the visibility that the Open Networking Foundation and OpenSourceSDN.org provide," said Nick Feamster, professor of computer science and acting director of the Center for Information Technology Policy at Princeton University. "Although today's announcement represents the culmination of several years of work to date, this partnership will enable an exciting set of new opportunities, exploring a much broader range of applications, modes, and business relationships for Internet interconnection."

With the support of the OpenSourceSDN.org community, the iSDX project is intended to expand to include improved traffic management and control, better support for interdomain security on the Internet, a much wider range of possible interconnection agreements and business relationships, and additional applications and use cases.

OpenSourceSDN.org was created as a repository where open source SDN software could be started, grown, developed, and used, and this significant software project donation helps to fulfill that vision. The community offers a simple, localized project governance, a standardized tool set, and global Apache 2.0 and Creative Commons 4.0 BY licensing for all code and documents, respectively. This allows open source projects to spin up quickly, gain community members worldwide, and leverage the existing support of ONF.

"We are thrilled that this ambitious project - one that already has the interest of major commercial players - is coming to our open source community," said Dan Pitt, executive director of the Open Networking Foundation. "We look forward to seeing how the iSDX project will evolve through community development to meet the needs of Internet Exchange service providers, ultimately demonstrating the promise of SDN technology for these organizations and their customers."

ONF and SDxCentral will host a free webinar on the iSDX software titled "Software-Defined Internet Exchange Points Offer New Hope for Solving Internet Routing Problems" on April 26 at 10 a.m. PT. Princeton University researcher and project lead Arpit Gupta and Professor Nick Feamster will discuss how iSDX aims to revolutionize wide-area traffic delivery by bringing SDN to Internet exchange points (IXPs). A demonstration of the iSDX project is set to take place at the ONF AppFest 2016, May 16 - 20, 2016, at the University of New Hampshire's InterOperability Lab (UNH-IOL (News - Alert)) in Durham, New Hampshire.
