Via Initiates Action Against Compal for Breach of AAC Patent License Agreement

Via Licensing Corporation today announced that it has initiated a breach of contract action against Compal Electronics and its affiliates in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, related to Compal's breach of its AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) Patent License Agreement. AAC is an audio compression scheme designed to provide high quality audio at lower bit-rates than previous MPEG audio compression formats.

In 2009, Compal licensed AAC patent rights from Via's AAC patent pool comprising ten leading AAC standard essential patent owners under the AAC Patent License Agreement. Compal's continued failure to abide by its contractual obligations related to its use of AAC technology required Via to take action.

"As an independent patent pool administrator offering the AAC Patent License Agreement to the global market, it is essential for Via to ensure compliance among all its more than750 licensees," said Joseph Siino, President of Via. "Via is committed to pursuing legal remedies against any licensee who elects to breach its contractual obligations."

Through its AAC patent pool, Via offers a license to the AAC patent portfolios of industry leading companies that include AT&T (News - Alert) Corp., Dolby Laboratories, Ericsson, Fraunhofer IIS, Koninklijke Philips N.V., Microsoft Corporation, NEC Corporation, NTT DOCOMO, INC., Orange (News - Alert) S.A., and Panasonic Corporation, the key innovators of the AAC audio compression standard that is widely adopted in broadcast, consumer electronics, mobile, automotive and personal computer products worldwide.
