Via Initiates Action Against Compal for Breach of AAC Patent License AgreementVia Licensing Corporation today announced that it has initiated a breach of contract action against Compal Electronics and its affiliates in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, related to Compal's breach of its AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) Patent License Agreement. AAC is an audio compression scheme designed to provide high quality audio at lower bit-rates than previous MPEG audio compression formats. In 2009, Compal licensed AAC patent rights from Via's AAC patent pool comprising ten leading AAC standard essential patent owners under the AAC Patent License Agreement. Compal's continued failure to abide by its contractual obligations related to its use of AAC technology required Via to take action.
