Fujitsu Collaborates with ONOS Industry Partners on Next Generation Central Office Architecture

Fujitsu, a leading provider of business, information technology, and communications solutions, today announced that it has successfully demonstrated CORD (Central Office Re-architected as a Data Center) implementation in both Enterprise and Residential proofs of concept pursued by the ONOS Project.

CORD is a first of its kind initiative to enable connectivity services over metro area networks, using only open source software and disaggregated hardware. By combining open-sourced NFV, SDN, and the elasticity of commodity clouds, CORD now brings datacenter economics and service agility to the Telco Central Office - a critical need for network operators responding to ever-increasing bandwidth demands and service expectations.

  • E-CORD enables service providers to offer SDN-WAN as well as MEF carrier Ethernet services. With E-CORD, enterprises can create multi-site virtual networks on demand with services such as intrusion detection, WAN acceleration, and others. E-CORD also showcases the world's first disaggregated ROADM (News - Alert), moving away from a closed, chassis-based, proprietary, and vertically integrated ROADM and towards a white box model controlled using open interfaces and protocols. Fujitsu is providing the 1FINITY™ T100 transport blade for this proof of concept.
  • Residential CORD (R-CORD) combines vCPE and virtualized wireline access technologies (e.g., GPON, 10GPON, G.Fast) with cloud-based subscriber services (e.g., parental control, video delivery) on the common CORD hardware and software platforms. Fujitsu is providing a GPON Optical Line Terminal (OLT) device for this proof of concept.

"CORD has rapidly matured into an important systems platform for service providers, thanks to the support, collaboration and contributions from companies like Fujitsu," said Guru Parulkar, Executive Director at ON (News - Alert).Lab. "Fujitsu's contributions of OpenFlow-enabled OLT to R-CORD and disaggregated ROADM components for E-CORD have been particularly important for our amazing progress leading up to POCs at ONS."

"As a founding partner of ONOS, Fujitsu is committed to making CORD a reality for servic providers," said Rod Naphan, Chief Technical Officer of Fujitsu Network Communications (News - Alert), Inc. "The CORD vision is built upon the same principles of our own platforms - disaggregation, programmability and open interfaces - to streamline services evolution while reducing costs."
