EMC CIO Richard Hadsall Receives Honors as Satellite Industry Pioneer and Leader

MIRAMAR, Fla., March 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Richard Hadsall, chief innovation officer of EMC, received two prestigious awards for his pioneering achievements in remote communications and content this week at the SATELLITE 2016 Show.

EMC CIO Richard Hadsall Received Lifetime Achievement Award and was Inducted into the Satellite Hall of Fame this week at SATELLITE 2016.

Today, Via Satellite Magazine presented its 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award to Hadsall during its annual Excellence Awards breakfast. The event honored the companies, technologies, campaigns and innovative people who have shaped the success of the global satellite industry. At an awards dinner March 8, the Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI) inducted Hadsall into its 2016 Satellite Hall of Fame. Hadsall had the honor of joining an esteemed list of visionaries who made invaluable contributions in the sector.

"Being recognized by Via Satellite for lifetime achievement and induction into the SSPI Satellite Hall of Fame are a tremendous honor," said Hadsall. "I've had a fortunate career pioneering the merge of satellites with new communications and content apps for more than three decades. I have had a very satisfying and productive career, from launching Crescomm to forming MTN, which EMC acquired. I appreciate this recognition in the company of only the most astute peers."

Hadsall's formal education began at the American Institute of Engineering and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Days after graduation, hiscareer took flight – and he hasn't stopped since. He drove the development and installation of the first motion-stabilized, very small aperture terminal (VSAT) satellite antenna for ships at sea. He launched the first C- and Ku-band broadband services at sea, and enabled the first live broadcasts from a moving train and a submerged submarine. Hadsall also created the first C-band transportable terminal, licensed by Intelsat, which played an important role in international broadcasting of summits and meetings conducted during U.S. President Ronald Reagan's administration. This is in addition to broadcasts from the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

In 2011, Hadsall became one of the few satellite engineers to receive an Emmy Award. This was in recognition for support of critical live TV and satellite transmission for continuous NBC broadcasting from Iraq. In addition, MTN honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.

"Richard Hadsall is widely known in the industry as the 'Father of Maritime VSAT,' among many other accomplishments," said Abel Avellan, founder and CEO of EMC. "These are distinguished honors for him and for EMC, and we are proud and grateful to have had the leadership from such a master-of-trade on our team."
