Top Mobility Satcom Innovations Honored by Mobile Satellite Users Association

The Mobile Satellite Users Association (MSUA), today announced and honored the winners of its annual Mobility Satcom Innovation Awards at a celebratory luncheon during Satellite 2016. Nominations, open to all MSUA members, represented innovations in aeronautical, government, M2M (machine-to-machine), maritime and emergency response communications.

Awards were presented to Cobham, Inmarsat, Iridium, Orbcomm and ViaSat (News - Alert) for their groundbreaking mobility satcom innovations.

"Presenting our annual Mobility Satcom Innovation Awards is one of the many ways MSUA will be spotlighting and recognizing those who are changing the game for satellite mobility," said Catherine Melquist (News - Alert), president of MSUA. "We had nearly full participation in the nominations from the MSUA membership and we are looking forward to hosting additional opportunities to foster satcom innovation."

The awards luncheon drew a crowd over 80 satellite professionals representing about 35 companies. The winners in each of the five categories and the corresponding "Companies to Watch" include:

  • Top Maritime Mobility Satcom Innovation Award

WINNER: Cobham's new SAILOR 60 GX high-throughput VSAT antenna system designed to leverage the spot-beam architecture of Inmarsat Global Xpress, enabling a smaller reflector-dish size reducing the size and weight of on-board antennas, lowering both the cost and complexity of installation.

Companies to Watch: Kymeta for the Kymeta mTenna®-a software-enabled, metamaterials-based, electronic beam-forming antenna, capable of transmitting and receivig from a single aperture to Ku-band satellites today and Ka-band satellites in 2017.

ITC Global for its Crew LIVE platform, a comprehensive crew welfare solution designed to provide a new level of connectivity and bandwidth to users on maritime vessels and other remote sites.

  • Top Government Mobility Satcom Innovation Award

WINNER: Inmarsat's Global Xpress, a next-generation end-to-end system, which brings seamless, affordable Ka-band for users anywhere around the globe.

Company to Watch: Hughes (News - Alert) Defense for its HM300 X-band terminal, a ruggedized, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), ultra-compact, lightweight terminal that can operate on any X-band service using the smallest size, weight, and power (SWaP) terminal footprint offered in the industry.

  • Top Emergency Response Mobility Satcom Innovation Award

WINNER: Iridium's (News - Alert) push-to-talk, the world's first global, satellite-based PTT service, enabling communication between users located anywhere on Earth.

Company to Watch: GlobalSat for its innovative use of BGAN in the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy (SHOA)'s Tide Gauge Network, which is part of the Chilean Tsunami Warning System.

  • Top M2M Mobility Satcom Innovation Award

WINNER: ORBCOMM's (News - Alert) game-changing OG2 modem, the industry's first modular, compatible modem OEM design allowing a VAR/system integrator to provide interchangeable satellite connectivity both easily and at no incremental cost on the same hardware platform.

Company to Watch: Marlink for their Proximity platform, a new global M2M management solution that provides complete visibility and control of satellite data in a single solution.

  • Top Aeronautical Mobility Satcom Innovation Award

WINNER: ViaSat's in-flight Wi-Fi system offering airlines and commercial aircraft manufacturers an in-flight connectivity and entertainment system that eclipses the quality and speeds of other in-cabin airline broadband services.

Company to Watch: Hughes Defense for its Airborne SATCOM System using the new Hughes HM200 modem and antenna that connects the airborne platform to the satellite and then to one or more ground stations.
