Hoover Institution: Remarks by General Mattis on State of Middle East

On Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at 5:00pm ET, General James Mattis and Admiral Gary Roughead will participate in a panel discussion entitled: "2016: International Security Challenges and U.S. Readiness." The discussion, moderated by Hoover Senior Fellow Peter Berkowitz, will analyze international security challenges in the year ahead, including the Middle East and Indo-Pacific regions, and how the United States is prepared to deal with them.

General James Mattis is an expert in national security, specializing in strategy, innovation, the effective use of military force, and the Middle East. Prior to Hoover, Mattis was the commander of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), where he was responsible for military operations involving more than 200,000 soldiers, airmen, Coast Guardsmen and Marines in the Middle East and south-central Asia.

Admiral Gary Roughead is an expert in multiple areas of U.S. naval operations. Following six operational commands with the U.S. Navy, Roughead became chief of naval operations in 2007. He is one of only two officers in the navy's history to have commanded both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. As chief, Roughead spearheaded numerous programs to improve and modernize the navy, including introducing bold programs to prepare for information warfare and the use of social media within the Navy.

The event will be OPEN (News - Alert) PRESS. Media credentials will be required and SPACE will be LIMITED. The speech will be streamed live on Hoover's website www.hoover.org/dc.
