Research and Markets - Fourth-Quarter Losses Sees Activision Blizzard Shares Fall by 20%

DUBLIN, February 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --

The global video games market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 6.59% by 2019, as noted in an industry report available from Research and Markets. The report also notes the key players in the global gaming market, with video game publisher Activison Blizzard leading the group. Activision Blizzard this week reported fourth-quarter revenue and profit figures lower than those predicted by analysts, and has seen shares fall as low as 20% as a result.

Activision Blizzard reported revenues of USD 2.12 billion1, falling short of the USD 2.2 billion predicted by analysts. The company has said that low sales of their Skylanders: SuperChargers and Guitar Hero Live games are to blame. Sales for Skylanders: Superchargers were especially low, as the toys-to-life video series faced new competition from Disney and Lego. According to a recent report, the global toys-to-life market will be worth USD 8.4 bllion by 2020, so Activision Blizzard can expect even tougher competition over the next few years.

Although the company did not reveal subscription numbers for their massively multiplayer online (MMO) series World of Warcraft, the reduction in revenue suggests falling numbers. The company reported 5.5 million subscribers in the previous quarter2, less than half of the 12 million users reported in 2011. The global MMO games market is expected to grow with a CAGR of 8% by 2019, offering Activision Blizzard the chance to regain subscription numbers.
