Technavio Releases New Report on Global RF Test Equipment Market

Technavio's latest hardware and semiconductor industry report covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global radio frequency (RF) test equipment market 2016-2020.

In this report, Technavio's semiconductor equipment research experts announce their key market highlights for the global RF test equipment market. Their findings include:

Adoption of long-term evolution (LTE (News - Alert)) technology as a communication standard will augment the demand for radio frequency (RF) test equipment

The global RF test equipment market is expected to reach over USD 5 billion by the end of 2020, posting a CAGR of more than 6%. Most electronic equipment such as radio sets, remote controllers, smartphones, Wi-Fi routers, PCs, and microwave ovens emit RF waves. The growing prevalence of these devices and the knowledge of long-term and short-term effects of radio waves have prompted many government organizations to introduce stringent regulations. Device manufacturers are required to adhere to these regulations for market approval. Thus, the demand for RF testing devices is increasing across all end-user segments.

The report underlines that the adoption of LTE-A standard, which is a major enhancement of LTE, as it offers wider coverage and faster data services, is on the rise. The benefits of adopting this technology are assurance of improved flexibility in network, reduced ownership cost for operators, reduced bit-cost for end-users, enhanced frequency spectrum, and energy-efficient radio access network (RAN) design.

"With the use of LTE-A, test equipment vendors are likely to gain multiple advantages such as more possible applications in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance. It also helps vendors increase acquisition of RF testing equipment for R&D. As LTE-A is required for upgradation and maintenance of networks, RF test equipment will see high demand from the telecom sector," says Technavio's lead semiconuctor equipment industry analyst Asif Gani.

Telecom sector: Largest contributor to the RF test equipment market

As the telecom sector is expanding at a rapid pace, many technologies are being developed to address the needs of the market. Rising adoption of smart devices has expanded the market for RF test equipment globally. Telecom technologies such as LTE, LTE-A, 4G, and 5G are adopted by many smartphone vendors. This further leads to the high adoption of RF test equipment as it facilitates early market delivery of these devices.

"RF test equipment is crucial in assessing wireless radio equipment for quality standards. It is used across all modulation schemes and processes for monitoring transmitted power output, analyzing the spectrum of sources of interference, and troubleshooting antenna and cable systems," says Asif.

Technavio estimates the market for RF test equipment in telecom to decline in 2016 due to the cyclical nature of the semiconductor industry. However, the market is expected to recover after 2016 due to the shift towards wireless technologies, all of which use RF waves to operate.

Telecom service providers are focusing on decreasing cellular traffic by deploying more Wi-Fi networks as Wi-Fi is considered a cost-cutting measure by most telecom providers. This is expected to increase the need for testing equipment to ensure that Wi-Fi signals are of carrier-grade quality.

Americas: Largest market for RF test equipment market set to grow at a CAGR of over 5% in 2020

The Americas led the RF test equipment market in 2015 with a market share of over 37%, largely due to early adoption of wireless technology. The region is expected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period, although its share will decrease minimally by the end of 2020.

Integration of advanced features into test equipment and rising demand from the electronics sector are driving the market for RF test equipment in the Americas. The US, being a prominent country, is a mature market for RF test equipment due to prevalence of LTE technology and early adoption of LTE-A technology. Certain South American countries are expected to adopt LTE technology during the forecast period.

The report also highlights top four vendors in the global RF test equipment market, which include:

  • Advantest
  • Anritsu (News - Alert)
  • Rohde & Schwarz
  • Teradyne
