Curaspan Partners with the Commonwealth of Virginia to Streamline the Submission of Preadmission Screening (PAS) Forms

Curaspan, the leading provider of care transition solutions, has partnered with the state of Virginia to automate the submission of Preadmission Screenings (PAS), which includes the lengthy Uniform Assessment Instrument (UAI) form to the Department of Medical Assistance Services' (DMAS) new ePAS system.

According to a December 1, 2015 DMAS Report to the General Assembly, DMAS is prohibited from funding Long Term Services and Support (LTSS) without an authorization, which is achieved via completions and submissions of preadmission screenings. In support of the PAS process, DMAS introduced ePAS, a paperless, automated reimbursement and tracking system for all entities contracted by DMAS to perform PAS.

In an effort to minimize workflow disruption and maximize efficiencies for their large Virginia customer base, Curaspan worked with the state to develop an interface between DischargeCentral®, Curaspan's cornerstone care transition solution, and ePAS to further streamline the submission process.

The integrated solution allows users to fill out the necessary forms within DischargeCentral and, once complete, submit the forms from the application directly to the state's portal with the click of a button, without having to leave DischargeCentral. Furthermore, the solution pre-populates forms with data from hospitals' ADT feeds and enables hospitals to easily share those forms with post-acute providers who rely on them for care reimbursement.

Thomas . Ferry, Curaspan President and CEO said, "We welcomed the opportunity to work with the state of Virginia and to provide continued support around streamlining our customers' workflows in support of new regulatory requirements." Since November, over 1,200 PAS forms were sent using the DischargeCentral interface. As a comparison and testament to simplifying workflows and creating efficiencies, only 6,000 forms were completed for all of 2015.

Curaspan successfully tested the solution with four Virginia hospitals in preparation for the state's Dec. 1, 2015 deadline, which required all submissions to be completed electronically.

Sentara RMH Medical Center, a 238-bed community hospital serving a seven-county area in Virginia, was one of the hospitals that tested the Curaspan solution. Brenda Parker, a nephrology case manager and 26-year veteran of Sentara RMH and unofficial UAI coordinator, saw time savings of up to 45 minutes per submission with the new integrated solution. Brenda explains, "When completing [submissions] in DischargeCentral, we're using forms that we've been using for years, so the familiarity is already there. I can do a screening on my patient in 15 minutes."

Today, Curaspan's solution is the only other state-approved method for submitted forms to the new ePAS system. Due to the success of the Virginia interface, Curaspan is currently exploring opportunities to interface with additional state portals.
