Initially, surgical booms were installed in order to reduce the clutter caused by having multiple carts surrounding the surgeon and the operating team. Many facilities have not yet upgraded their lighting system, meaning that there is still a relatively large halogen installed base, which is helping drive the growth of LED light systems. LED surgical lights require a higher initial investment than their halogen counterparts; however, LED surgical lights also provide higher light intensity at a lower wattage than halogen lights, resulting in lower energy consumption.
